The latest episode of ‘Tracker proves Colter and Reenie would be better off as friends
For the first time this season of Tracker, Colter Shaw (Justin Hartley) and Reenie (Fiona Rene) finally reunite on screen, solving the case of a missing woman in Episode 4, “Noble Rot.” Reenie wins an invitation to a business leadership summit at an exclusive vineyard in Napa when she learns that a retreat guest, software executive Quinn Ridgely (Jessica Sutton), has gone missing, prompting Reenie to call her favorite rewarder for help.
It’s great to see these two characters back together to work on their respective and ultimately case-solving skills, using their unique talents and quirks to find Quinn, while also uncovering some dark secrets from the vineyard’s past. It’s clear that Reenie and Colter make a great team, and while there’s still a lot of chemistry between them, it’s clear that, at least for now, Colter and Reenie would be better off as friends.
It’s only natural for viewers to want their favorite characters to get together, especially when they have a lot of on-screen chemistry. The terms “ship” and “endgame” have become part of the TV lexicon and are being used in a much more mainstream way lately. The advent of social media has made series creators, writers, and cast members much more accessible, giving fans the opportunity to be vocal about the relationships they’d like to see on their favorite shows.
Ever since fans realized that Reenie would be returning to Tracker Season 1, she’s been considered a serious potential love interest for Colter. In the first episode, it was revealed that the two had a somewhat tumultuous past, but over the course of Tracker’s first season, they’ve become a formidable dynamic couple, with cinematic chemistry. The format of a slow-burn romance is certainly nothing new on television, especially when it comes to professional partners, with Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) and Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson) being the most classic example on The X-Files, as well as Elliot Stabler (Chris Meloni) and Olivia Benson (Mariska Hargitay) on Law & Order more recently.
The obvious romantic tension between Colter and Reenie is what makes their relationship dynamic, with a perfect example of this occurring in this week’s episode. As the two look over surveillance footage, Colter peppers Reenie with questions about the man she brought as her “partner” to the retreat, a seemingly nice lawyer named Elliot (Michael Rady). Reenie can’t help but smile, while also teasing Colter about his recent work with his ex and former rival Billie (Sofia Pernas). It’s a great scene that illustrates why pairing their characters up in a romantic relationship right now would be a hasty mistake.
Whatever Reenie felt about Colter at the end of Season 1, it’s clear that she’s not sitting around waiting for him. Colter’s brother Russell (Jensen Ackles) even takes Reenie out to dinner, something Colter alluded to at the beginning of this week’s episode. While Reenie assures Colter that nothing romantic is going on between her and his brother, Colter smiles sadly. It’s almost like Colter knows Reenie deserves to be happy, and right now, he’s going to have to accept that she’s found someone else to do it for.
That seems to be the case with Elliot, a former fellow lawyer of Reenie’s. She told Colter that they used to have a relationship, but didn’t want things to get messy at work, so they called it quits. Now that Reenie has her own outfit, she’s reached out to Elliot, seemingly rekindling an old flame. It’s interesting to see how Elliot and Colter treat each other, both when they first meet and at the end of the episode when Colter thanks Elliot for being willing to step in and help with the case. There’s no toxic jealousy on either side, just respect. It wouldn’t be surprising if Elliot returns later this season because he seems like exactly the guy Reenie’s looking for.
Meanwhile, in the Season 2 premiere, viewers were introduced to Camille (Floriana Lima), who has been set up as Colter’s romantic interest. Camille’s sister, Gina, went missing ten years ago today, a case that Colter has been trying to solve for years. The dark past between the two adds depth to their relationship beyond a simple romantic connection. Colter is clearly obsessed with the case; he even promised Camille that he would find her sister, which Hartley pointed out to TVLine is something his character never does again. There’s an ease between Colter and Camille, and it will be interesting to see how their relationship plays out over the course of the season.
