Netflix Virgin River fans are all saying the same thing about ‘knock-off’ new TV series
Jack and Mel won’t be back on screens for another few months, but there could be a perfect show to fill the void
Fans of Virgin River have been quick to label the new CBS drama Fire Country as a “knock-off” of their beloved Netflix show.
The narrative of Virgin River centres on Mel Monroe (played by Alexandra Breckenridge) and Jack Sheridan (Martin Henderson), who navigate their relationship while addressing various issues in their quaint town.
Fire Country, on the other hand, ups the ante by introducing Bode Donovan (Max Thieriot), a convict turned firefighter, who combats blazes and responds to emergencies across Northern California.
Set in the fictional town of Edgewater, some viewers feel it bears a striking resemblance to the picturesque setting of Virgin River.
Adding to the comparison, actor Ian Tracey, known for his role as Jimmy, has appeared in the Fire Country episode titled Happy to Help. With both series being shot in Vancouver, speculation arises about whether more actors might cross over in upcoming seasons, reports the Express.
A fan of both series expressed their thoughts on Reddit, claiming that Fire Country is an ideal watch during the break from Virgin River.
“I just got into Fire Country and it’s sooooooooooo reminiscent of Virgin River,” they commented.
“Even some of the actors (well one) [and] even the location reminds of Virgin River.”
This sentiment was echoed by several viewers who have watched both series, suggesting that Fire Country might be the perfect show to binge-watch while waiting for the return of Mel and Jack before the end of 2024.
“I’m watching it right now too,” another fan remarked. “It’s definitely good to fill the void.”
One person opined: “Tbh I think Fire Country is marginally better.”
A third enthused, “I just finished another rewatch last night! Off to Sullivans Crossing for my first rewatch of the show.”
Intriguingly, Sullivan’s Crossing, a CTV and CW drama, originates from the pen of Robyn Carr, also responsible for Virgin River, suggesting it’s also a prime choice to fill the gap during breaks.
Highlighting the connection, a fan referred to a discussion thread they had initiated: “Just started Fire Country and it’s very similarly cheesy and should definitely exist in the same cinematic universe as Virgin River.”
The green light has been given to Fire Country for a third season, with an October launch date on the cards.
Season three will also see an exciting update to the cast, as Jared Padalecki, renowned for his role on Supernatural, joins the series playing a tenacious SoCal firefighter by the name of Camden.
