Emotional Ranking – All the Romance at Firehouse 51 in Chicago Fire

Emotional Ranking – All the Romance at Firehouse 51 in Chicago Fire

Chicago Fire has had its fair share of romances, whether they be merely hookups or result in marriages, and eight have happened between coworkers at Firehouse 51. Unfortunately, given the nature of the relationship, most in-house relationships in the One Chicago TV show have failed. Dating someone you work with can be quite complicated, after all. Only a couple of the Firehouse 51 romances in Chicago Fire have been truly successful, while the rest have crashed and burned over the course of the series’ 13 seasons.

Many fan-favorite Chicago Fire relationships have been between someone who works at Firehouse 51 and someone who doesn’t. For example, Wallace Boden and Donna Robbins had a happy and healthy marriage in the NBC procedural drama, but Donna wasn’t a part of the Firehouse 51 crew, meaning they can’t be ranked on this list. The same goes for Randall “Mouch” McHolland and Trudy Platt (who works in the 21st District in Chicago PD) and Christopher Herrmann and his wife, Cindy. Nevertheless, some of the most exciting and memorable Chicago Fire romances have been between coworkers.

8. Joe Cruz & Sylvie Brett
Status: Broken Up

Some might have forgotten that Sylvie Brett and Joe Cruz were once an item in Chicago Fire, and it’s hard to blame anyone who has erased this couple from their minds. Brett and Cruz were better off as friends as there were no sparks between them. The writers tried pushing the two fan-favorite Chicago Fire characters together, but it always felt forced since it was obvious that their dynamic was closer to a brother-sister relationship than a romantic one.

The good news is that Brett and Cruz’s romance didn’t last very long in Chicago Fire season 3. The paramedic and firefighter soon came to realize what everyone else had already known — they worked much better as friends than as romantic partners. As a result, Brett and Cruz broke up and, over the years, fostered a great friendship. Brett exited Chicago Fire in season 12, while Cruz remained at Firehouse 51, and they both got their happy endings.

7. Blake Gallo & Gianna Mackey
Status: Broken Up

Blake Gallo and Gianna Mackey had a quick fling as Adriyan Rae (who played Mackey) appeared in only nine episodes of Chicago Fire season 9. So, their relationship is another one that is easy to forget. Nevertheless, the attraction between Gallo and Mackey was evident from the moment she entered Firehouse 51. Mackey, who grew up in the same neighborhood as Cruz, was the new paramedic following Emily Foster’s exit, and although Cruz was adamant that she not engage in a romance with Gallo, Mackey hooked up with Gallo anyway.

However, Gallo and Mackey never put a label on their relationship. Their feelings for one another never deepened further than physical attraction. Their relationship was over before it ever truly began once Mackey transferred to Firehouse 33 in Chicago Fire season 9, episode 9, and that was the end of their rather forgettable story.

6. Gabby Dawson & Peter Mills
Status: Broken Up

Unfortunately, the connection between Gabby Dawson and Peter Mills was also quite forgettable, and not only because their romance played out in Chicago Fire season 1’s episodes. The two characters formed a bond that started as friendship but turned romantic one night when they hooked up after sharing a meal. Gabby and Mills decided to pursue a relationship, but Mills was always going to come second to Matt Casey in Gabby’s eyes. Since she couldn’t have Casey, Gabby settled for Mills.

Gabby was essentially leading Mills on for the majority of their relationship, which is why they are far from being Firehouse 51’s best couple.

Mills eventually broke up with Gabby in Chicago Fire after learning she never told him about the affair between Chief Boden and Mills’ mother. Later, Mills tried to give their relationship a second shot, but even he knew that Gabby was in love with Casey. As a result, Gabby and Mills remained friends. Gabby was essentially leading Mills on for the majority of their relationship, which is why they are far from being Firehouse 51’s best couple.

5. Violet Mikami & Blake Gallo
Status: Broken Up

Gallo surely didn’t have much luck finding love at Firehouse 51 in the One Chicago universe. Aside from his fling with Mackey, Gallo also had a relationship with paramedic Violet Mikami, who he knew from his days at the Fire Academy. The two started as rivals, but it was clear that their arguments and snide remarks were their way of flirting with one another. The opposite of love is hate, after all, and Gallo and Violet soon started hooking up in Chicago Fire season 8.

Gallo suggested they keep their relationship non-exclusive but became jealous when he saw Violet with other men. Consequently, they broke up, which was ultimately for the best. Violet has much more chemistry with other characters, and she and Gallo are better off as friends. Despite their breakup, Gallo’s Chicago Fire season 12 exit still greatly affected Violet.

4. Matt Casey & Gabby Dawson
Status: Divorced

If this list was written circa 2015, Gabby and Casey might have been number one. Alas, their Chicago Fire relationship ended in heartbreak as it epically crashed and burned towards the end of Monica Raymund’s time on the show. At the beginning of the NBC procedural drama, viewers learned that Gabby, a paramedic at the time, had a huge crush on Casey, who was engaged to Dr. Hallie Thomas. Although Casey ended the engagement in season 1, it still took some time for him and Gabby to have a stable relationship as it was always on and off.

Casey and Gabby’s romance was like a rollercoaster from the very beginning. They were seemingly never able to get on the same page. However, Casey and Gabby had a one-night stand during one of their off periods, which resulted in Gabby getting pregnant. Sadly, she miscarries due to an ectopic pregnancy. In season 5, Casey and Gabby finally got married, but their happiness was never meant to last. Gabby left Chicago Fire at the end of season 6, moving to Puerto Rico. She and Casey divorced, finally ending their whirlwind romance that was more exhausting to watch than exciting.

3. Violet Mikami & Sam Carver
Status: Broken Up (For Now)

As of the writing of this article, Violet and Sam Carver are broken up in Chicago Fire season 13. However, it’s only a matter of time before they get back together, effectively ending their will-they/won’t-they relationship. But until then, viewers get to enjoy the slow burn between Violet and Carver. The paramedic and the firefighter began hooking up in season 12, keeping their relationship casual. Violet was still hurting from Evan Hawkins’ death, and she promised herself that she would never fall in love with a first responder again. Of course, life had different plans for Violet.

During the Chicago Fire season 12 finale, Violet got mad at Carver, thinking he had feelings for Stella Kidd. Her accusations extremely upset Carver, and he told Violet, “I’m not in love with Kidd because I’m stupid enough to have fallen in love with you.” Carver then took a long furlough and when he returned to Firehouse 51 in Chicago Fire season 13 premiere, he was dating one of his former girlfriends from when he was younger. Although they might not be together at the beginning of season 13, Violet and Carver are still in love with one another.

2. Matt Casey & Sylvie Brett
Status: Married

Following Gabby’s exit, Casey started developing feelings for Brett in Chicago Fire, and vice versa. However, both felt guilty because of Gabby (who was Brett’s paramedic partner and friend) and were hesitant to jump into a relationship. So, it took a long time for Casey and Brett to get together. They finally kissed in season 9 but had regrets and agreed to move forward as friends. Neither Casey nor Brett could ignore their evergrowing feelings, though, and they let their worries go in the Chicago Fire season 9 finale.

Unfortunately, Casey decided to move to Oregon just when he and Brett began dating in season 10. Andrew Darden’s two sons were left without a guardian after their mother was sent to prison, so, Casey decided to step in. Casey and Brett tried long distance, but it proved too difficult. Brett broke up with Casey during the season 11 premiere. However, Casey returned to Chicago in the finale and proposed, and Brett said yes. Casey and Brett’s Chicago Fire wedding took place in season 12, episode 6, and afterward, the two rode off into the sunset (aka Oregon) together.

1. Kelly Severide & Stella Kidd
Status: Married

No matter how frustrating they can be, Kelly Severide and Stella Kidd undoubtedly have the best Firehouse 51 relationship in Chicago Fire. They have been together the longest and have gotten through every obstacle life has thrown their way. There have been numerous times when it has seemed like Severide and Kidd’s relationship would end (especially when rumors about Taylor Kinney’s possible Chicago Fire exit were running rampant). Nevertheless, their marriage remains strong as of the writing of this article.

Severide and Kidd had a history before she transferred to Truck 81 at the end of season 4 and while she was still married to Grant Smith (Kinney’s character tried hitting on her). The sexual tension between Severide and Kidd couldn’t be ignored, and they started a casual relationship, which soon turned into an on-and-off-again romance. Eventually, Severide proposed to Kidd, and they got married in season 10. Since then, Severide and Kidd’s relationship has experienced many hurdles
