According to a new report, the upcoming 9-1-1 spinoff may have found a home. From co-creators Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk, and Tim Minear, the burgeoning small-screen drama series began in 2018 with a main season set in Los Angeles. Originally on Fox, 9-1-1 moved to ABC after its original network ceased airing. However, its spinoff, 9-1-1 Lone Star, will continue to air on Fox and will end its run there after the current year. Admittedly, the cancellation is still divisive, but there are positives, as its end means the start of a new branch.
In a new report from Deadline, citing anonymous sources, the next 9-1-1 series will take place in Hawaii. Other states are being considered after Los Angeles and Austin as locations for the next project. Apparently, Las Vegas is a favorite. Most recently, however, the show’s creators have expressed an interest in setting their next police procedural in the 9-1-1 series in Hawaii. Despite this, however, the outlet notes a number of challenges to getting the project off the ground, including the fact that the island is an expensive state to film in. ABC and Studio 20th Television declined to comment.
Why a 9-1-1 spinoff in Hawaii is exciting but also risky Hawaii is an expensive filming location Hawaii is a popular procedural location for TV, with shows like Gilligan’s Island, both Hawaii Five-0s and Magnum P.I., as well as Lost, using the island paradise as a backdrop. Setting production in Hawaii comes with a high cost, though. CBS recently canceled NCIS: Hawai’i after just three seasons and a major shakeup, reportedly due to cost-cutting. It’s worth noting that the latest contemporary NCIS spinoff has been a big hit, being the 12th most-watched non-sports show of the last television cycle. Even with that achievement, the network was forced to pull the plug on the show. Currently, Fox has the only show on network television set in Hawaii — Rescue Hi-Surf. Produced by John Wells Productions, Fox Entertainment, and Warner Bros. Television, the show has a storyline that’s very similar to Baywatch. However, based on other 9-1-1 shows, the show is said to expand beyond responding to beach accidents and incidents to dealing with a variety of emergencies across the island. This will allow the show to showcase the rest of Hawaii’s beauty.
