Unraveling the Mystery: How Paternity Speculation Shapes Will Trent in Season 2

Will Trent executive producer Daniel Thomsen has explained how speculation about the titular spy’s paternity will impact him as season 2 continues. Episode 2 of season 2 revealed that the GBI Special Agent still has family, an uncle named Antonio Miranda. He receives information from James Ulster, a serial killer who killed his mother when he was a child – and who now claims to be his biological father.

Speaking to TVLine, Thomsen revealed how Will Trent season 2 will show the protagonist’s haunting questions about his father as the show continues. The showrunner teased a connection between flashbacks of him when he was younger and James, suggesting more about their relationship has yet to be revealed. Check out what Thomsen had to say below: I don’t know what Will found out that would make [James Ulster] take a [paternity] test. [Will] begins to lose control of the thing that he has always been rewarded for, [which is] the way he can see the world a certain way and control it and solve crimes. He wonders what lies beneath the surface, and I think that is what [eventually] leads back to Ulster.

James’s claim that he is related to Will has yet to be backed up by any concrete evidence, much less the idea that he is his father. However, he manages to get inside the spy’s head after Cricket’s death, telling him about Antonio and deepening the mystery of his past. This also prompts him to start profiling his uncle, trying to discern any information he can find that will lead him to his whereabouts.

While James’ claim does not confirm that he is Will’s father, it is a twist that could prove true depending on what else is revealed about the spy’s past. His reunion with Antonio could be all the confirmation he needs, perhaps revealing more unknown details surrounding his mother’s death. It’s also possible that his uncle doesn’t know anything that could help him discover his real father, keeping the mystery alive.

In the same interview, Thomsen said Antonio will be the main focus of Will’s past in season 2, meaning his real father may not be discovered for a while. This opens the door for Will Trent season 3 to address these ideas, once again shining a brighter light on James. With so much mystery still surrounding the main character’s family, it will be a while before his entire past is fully explored.
