Now that we’ve had some time to process everything that happened in the Will Trent Season 2 finale, we have some serious questions about what happens next.
The show has already been renewed for Season 3, so fans can rest assured that the story will somehow continue after the main character’s huge and devastating decision. In fact, the series is expected to return mid-season as part of ABC’s fall 2024 schedule, so fans won’t have to wait too long.
As for whether all of our burning questions will be answered in the 18-episode third season, that remains to be seen. However, here are our burning questions about what happens when Will Trent returns for Season 3. What happens to Angie?
As we saw in the Season 2 finale, Will Trent (Ramón Rodríguez) had a painful decision to make after discovering the truth about Angie’s (Erika Christensen) encounter with Lenny: He could stick to his moral principles and arrest her for lying to cover up Crystal’s murder of her abuser, or pretend not to know the truth and potentially move on with his life of happiness with his longtime lover. For better or worse, he chose the former, and now we have to wonder what that means for Angie.
Will she go to jail? Will the District Attorney’s Office decide not to prosecute considering the real culprit is dead? And if so, what will her punishment be?
For her part, Erika Christensen herself told TV Insider, “I hope we find ourselves in a completely new world. But the writers are so good at taking everything we’ve established so far and staying true to these characters in this world. I’m also trying to see how they’re going to evolve after this finale.”
Will Angie ever be able to forgive Will?
Theoretically, the best-case scenario is that Angie gets a slap on the wrist from the DA, which is entirely possible given Angie’s traumatic experiences with Lenny and her desire to protect Crystal from danger. Even then, though, it’s unclear how her decision might impact her career—it’s certain Amanda Wagner (Sonja Sohn) will have to erase her recommendation to the GBI—or her relationship with Will.
Angie and Will are finally at a solid stage in their relationship. Finally! And now what? How can they recover? And do they want to?
Of this open-ended ending, executive producer Liz Heldens told TV Insider, “It’s great to be able to throw all the pieces up in the air and figure out where they’re going to land. And so I think that’s going to be a fun, challenging change for us.”
Meanwhile, EP Daniel T. Thomsen added, “I think one of the things that people love about this show is how authentic it feels to what these characters are going through, and I think that kind of seismic change that you have to figure out how to adapt to is a part of life for everyone. And so we’re excited to find out what that looks like for her as well as him being forced to contemplate a chapter in his life without Angie.”
Where will Will go now?
One of the most pressing questions after the finale, of course, is where in the world is Will right now. He left Nico (Cora Lu Tran) in charge of the house and headed off with Betty. We know he has some family in Puerto Rico, so is it possible he’s headed back to the island to relax after such a difficult case outcome? Or is there some work for him right now?
One thing’s for sure: The fact that he’s gone unannounced is pretty shocking.
Does Michael have a shot at the GBI?
Assuming Angie is no longer in contention for a position at the GBI—which is an incredibly fair assumption—the position could still be open to another candidate. Considering the time Michael Ormewood (Jake McLaughlin) spent with the GBI solving serial killer cases, they’d probably consider him a good addition to the team.
Of course, this would be especially helpful for him, as he is likely facing firing his partner and trying to file a child custody lawsuit. Speaking of which…
