Between the action-packed rescue missions and simmering romances, Season 13 of Chicago Fire has been bringing the heat. And the romantic tide is turning for 51 fan favorite Violet Mikami (Hanako Greensmith).
Violet has been on a losing streak this season after her romance with Sam Carver (Jake Lockett) hit a snag at the end of Season 12. Violet and Carver’s chemistry is explosive, but after Carver returns to 51 after a sabbatical with his ex, Violet struggles to get over it. It’s been tough for 51’s rock star paramedic, but in Season 13, Episode 5 (“Down the Rabbit Hole”), Violet’s bad luck in love comes to an end after she meets Chicago Fire’s new character Flynn, played by Steven Strait.

As Violet prepares for her birthday, all of Firehouse 51 is excited to celebrate at Molly’s. While everyone shows up to shower Violet with affection, Carver is forced to leave early after setting his girlfriend up by not telling her the truth about his whereabouts. Violet spends the rest of the episode reflecting on the ordeal, knowing she’s caused trouble in Carver’s relationship.
Meanwhile, Violet’s ER partner, Lyla Novak (Jocelyn Hudon), assures her that it’s best to stay out of Carver’s business for the time being. There’s too much baggage there. The paramedics don’t have much time to chat about Violet’s tumultuous love life before they’re called to the Chicago Riverwalk after a falafel vendor is attacked by a biker and flees the scene.
The paramedics are greeted by a distraught but charming man who briefs them on the situation after witnessing the attack. Before the paramedics arrive, he notices that the vendor’s leg is badly cut, so he uses his shirt to tie up the wound to stop the bleeding from the “carotid artery.” This gives Violet a moment of pause—the carotid artery is located near the neck—but she gets what he means.
“Yeah, that was a pretty smart move,” she tells him.
The man helps them lift the vendor onto a stretcher and takes him to an ambulance, where he assures the stranger that he’ll be fine. Novak compliments him for acting the way he did; The vendor was lucky he was there to help before the paramedics could get there.
Once they were out of earshot, Novak whispered to Violet, “We’ll recap later on how hot he was, right?”
After another chaotic shift, Novak and Violet were out in the daylight when they saw the man from the Chicago Riverwalk approaching Fire Station 51. He asked the paramedics if they remembered him—he had been shirtless earlier and was now wearing a sharp suit—when Novak quickly made an excuse to give Violet the floor. After checking on the vendor’s condition, the heroic civilian introduced himself.
“I’m Flynn,” he told her, shaking her hand.
“Violet,” she replied.
“I just wanted to thank you for not embarrassing me,” Flynn told her.
“Embarrassing you?” Violet asked.
“I told everyone in the office about my great save and how smart I was to tie off the carotid artery—” “Oh,” Violet said knowingly.
“They found the carotid artery in your neck, not your leg,” Flynn said sadly. “I guess everyone in the world knows that except me.”

Why Her Future Is in Danger Violet assured him that all that mattered was that he got the tourniquet in the right place, and laughed as Flynn continued. “I was just starting to think I should be better prepared for another emergency,” Flynn teased. “I mean, next week, someone’s going to go find the hot dog vendor—I need to be ready.”
Flynn asked her if she knew of any first aid classes, and Violet cheerfully informed him that she taught one.
“I can send you the link,” Violet informed him. “And you know I won’t embarrass you in class.”
“That’s right,” Flynn laughed.
“There’s also a great bar nearby if you want a drink afterwards,” Violet suggested coyly.
“There’s nothing ‘maybe’ about that,” Flynn smiled. “I agree.”
Violet gave Flynn her number as they both grinned.
