Tom Selleck’s Candid Quotes About ‘Blue Bloods’ Ending With Season 14: ‘Frustrating’ and ‘Impossible’
Tom Selleck has been very outspoken about not wanting Blue Bloods to end. The Emmy winner has not held anything back when it comes to sharing his true feelings about the show’s final season.
Season 14, which began airing its second half on October 18, 2024, was officially deemed the last season of the show by CBS. But up until the premiere, Tom was optimistic that fan efforts to save the show would be successful. Sadly, all good things must come to an end.
Tom Selleck Is ‘Frustrated’
Tom admitted that he was disappointed that Blue Bloods is officially dunzo.
“I’m kind of frustrated. During those last eight shows, I haven’t wanted to talk about an ending for Blue Bloods but about it still being wildly successful,” he told TV Insider in October 2024. “In a Top 100 Shows of 2023-2024 (in total viewers, we were number 9 out of 100), if you discount the three football shows, we’re #6 ! I’m not going to turn into a bitter old guy saying, ‘Get off my lawn!’ I don’t believe in holding grudges, but if you were to say to the television network, ‘Here’s a show you can program in the worst time slot you got, and it is going to guarantee you winning Friday night for the next 15 years,’ it would be almost impossible to believe.”
‘Blue Bloods’ Is ‘Taken for Granted’
“My frustration is the show was always taken for granted because it performed from the get-go. So how do I feel? It’s going to take a long time to sort all of this out,” Tom said. “I remember after the weekend [of the final episode’s shoot], I said, “I’ve got to get to bed early tonight because I have to do my dialogue for Monday.’” Well, there was no Monday. It’s just going to take a while.”
On What He’ll Miss the Most
Saying goodbye to a show he has worked on for 14 years was made all the more harder for Tom because he genuinely liked all of the people he worked with. He revealed that the actors are what he will miss most about the show.
“The actors. The family of actors is as close as the Reagan family and the characters that they play,” Tom explained. “There’s isn’t a single one of them who didn’t want to come back. Most shows don’t end that way — there’s petty jealousy and all sorts of things– and we seemed to overcome that. It’s something for everybody to hang their hats on and be proud of.”
On the Future of Broadcast Television
Tom appeared with the Blue Bloods cast at PaleyFest in NYC ahead of the premiere of the second half of season 14. He expressed his hopes in the future of broadcast television after working on the show for more than a decade.
“I have great faith and have had great faith in broadcast television,” he said. “I think it’s suffered from being put in second or third place. And, you know, I don’t think everybody in the world wants to spend an hour on their remote control looking for what they might want to see.”
On Finances
Tom made remarks about the show ending and how it would impact his life on his 63-acre ranch located in Ventura County, California.
“You know, hopefully I keep working enough to hold onto the place,” he told CBS News in May 2024.
“That’s always an issue,” he added. “If I stopped working, yeah. Am I set for life? Yeah, but maybe not on a 63-acre ranch!”
