Netflix’s Virgin River fans ‘furious’ over ‘worst storyline’ in the show
Virgin River viewers have been left fuming over a ‘selfish’ and ‘reckless’ pregnancy storyline in the new season, which they have branded the ‘worst’ in the show
Virgin River enthusiasts have been criticizing the show’s latest season, which has taken its characters on unexpected journeys. The romantic escapades of Mel Monroe (played by Alexandra Breckenridge) and Jack Sheridan (Martin Henderson) are set to continue in the eagerly awaited sixth season of the small-town saga.
Meanwhile, fans have been dissecting the narrative thus far, including a controversial choice made by young couple Denny Cutler (Kai Bradbury) and Lizzie (Sarah Dugdale). In the fourth season, newcomer Denny, who is revealed to be Vernon ‘Doc’ Mullins’ (Tim Matheson) long-lost grandson, gets caught pilfering pills from Doc’s clinic and moving a hefty sum of money.
Initially suspected of being a scammer, the plot takes a sorrowful turn when it’s disclosed that Denny requires the medication to manage his Huntington’s disease, a fatal ailment that leads to the degeneration of brain cells. However, the decision by Denny and Lizzie to proceed with an unplanned pregnancy, despite the high risk of passing on Denny’s genetic disorder to their child, has irked some viewers.
A recent Reddit thread brought attention to one viewer’s indignation, citing the story of another Reddit user with Huntington’s whose parents concealed the diagnosis from them, as a cautionary tale for what might unfold for Denny and Lizzie. “OP in this post found out they have Huntington’s Disease and their parents kept it from them,” the post revealed.
“The comments from others who had a similar situation happen is heartbreaking. I’m so mad at Denny and Lizzie for how reckless they were getting pregnant,” reports the Daily Record.
They gave their harsh judgement: “This is the worst VR storyline IMO.” Many other Virgin River fans echoed this user’s opinion in the comments, with one writing: “I HATE that they made this storyline the way they did. Huntington’s has a 50/50 chance of being passed down and Lizzie is just all whatever! about it.”
Another viewer vented: “I don’t care if Denny is the healthiest weirdo in 100 miles VR writers should be fired and blacklisted for the pregnant Lizzie storyline. They might as well have just killed off the character. I draw the line at Huntingtons, super selfish to put that on a kid,” another said. “And a terrible way to die, not only for you but your loved ones.”
And a final fan wrote: “I’m in healthcare and thought it was weird. Hone
Images from the new season have confirmed Lizzie will be a few months pregnant when the series returns, so how will Virgin River handle the next chapter of one of its most contested storylines?
