Dermot Mulroney Embraces Full-Circle Moment as New Fire Chief on Chicago Fire

Dermot Mulroney’s new role as Fire Chief Dom Pascal on Chicago Fire is a meaningful one, bringing the actor back to a city that holds special significance in his life. During his appearance on the TODAY show on Oct. 21, the 60-year-old reflected on his connection to Chicago, where he spent formative years and developed ties that still resonate today.

Mulroney first arrived in Illinois as a student at Northwestern University. His bond with the city strengthened in 1997 when he filmed My Best Friend’s Wedding alongside Julia Roberts. Now, decades later, he’s back in Chicago to film the 13th season of Chicago Fire.

During his conversation with TODAY host Al Roker, Mulroney acknowledged the “full-circle” nature of his return. “That’s the most amazing thing. I’m running into people I worked with back then. Even more interestingly, I’m now working with their kids,” he shared. One touching example is Marissa, the Chicago Fire hair stylist, whose father was the set painter on My Best Friend’s Wedding.

Mulroney also recalled reconnecting with Rick LeFevour, the stunt coordinator and his stunt double in the 1997 film. Remarkably, he’s now being doubled by LeFevour’s son, Rick Jr. “I think that means I’ll never get old in Chicago. They keep me young, especially from behind,” he joked.

As Mulroney steps into his new role as Chief Dom Pascal, he’s taking over from Eamonn Walker, who portrayed Wallace Boden for 12 seasons before his character became deputy district chief in Season 10. Walker’s character, however, is not entirely gone from the series, with the potential to return in a recurring capacity.

Mulroney expressed gratitude for joining such a well-established show. “It’s amazing. First of all, it’s nice to have a steady job for once. Thank you, NBC, for that,” he quipped, before adding, “And to be working with an incredible cast that is so close with each other.”

He also highlighted the learning experience he’s gaining from his physically demanding new role. “It’s an education every day on such a well-run show,” he said, appreciating the opportunity to be part of the One Chicago family.

For Mulroney, the return to Chicago has been a nostalgic and rewarding journey, blending old memories with new experiences. And as he steps into this new chapter, it’s clear the actor is embracing every moment.
