Donnie Wahlberg reveals Blue Bloods episode Jenny McCarthy complimented him on when they began dating
Wahlberg, however, wasn’t exactly the biggest fan of the season 3 episode, which he said “drove me crazy.”
Donnie Wahlberg says his wife Jenny McCarthy’s favorite episode of Blue Bloods might just be his least favorite.
While speaking at a PaleyFest panel for the CBS series this week, the actor recalled a hilarious moment that occurred when he and McCarthy first began dating in which the Masked Singer panelist shared that she loved the season 3 episode “Greener Grass” — an episode that Wahlberg wasn’t exactly a fan of at the time.
“When I started dating my wife, [series writer] Dan [Truly]’s episode came on TV, and it was in season 3, and it was Danny was getting offered a job to be a personal security guard and leave the police department,” Wahlberg said. “And I was like, ‘Who’s gonna hire me? I’m five foot nine.’”
The episode, which aired in 2012, sees Wahlberg’s character, Danny Reagan, offered a high-paying job as protection for one of his sister Erin’s (Bridget Moynahan) witnesses. Wahlberg explained that the episode’s premise just didn’t feel “realistic” to him, but noted that Truly was certain that it was going to be a hit.
“So I was like, ‘Oh, that episode,’” he remarked. “It drove me crazy.”
That is, until he met McCarthy. “When I started dating Jenny, she goes, ‘I’ve seen a lot of your show,’” Wahlberg shared. “She said, ‘You know what I really love is that one where you got the job offer to be a personal assistant. That’s my favorite episode!’”
Talking directly to Truly, who was in the audience at the event, Wahlberg cheekily added, “So thanks, Dan. You really helped seal the deal!”
The couple, who initially met in 2012, married two years later in 2014. While she’s never made an official appearance on the show, McCarthy is definitely part of the Blue Bloods family, and has been known to phone her husband in between takes during Reagan family dinner scenes.
“She’s that extra person at the family dinner,” Wahlberg’s costar Bridget Moynahan revealed on The Drew Barrymore Show in April. “The phone is always there, and in between takes it’s like, ‘Hi, honey,’ ‘Hi, honey,’ and we’re all, ‘Jenny!” So she’s always there.”
