Chicago Fire’s season 12 finale shocked viewers when Jack Damon revealed that he was Kelly Severide’s half-brother, but just a few episodes later, Damon left without telling his story. The season 13 premiere saw a lot of changes at Firehouse 51. Chief Dom Pascal replaced Boden in Chicago Fire season 13, while Damon and Severide adjusted to the fact that they were related. The brothers got along well as Damon looked to Severide for guidance as a firefighter and Severide was willing to help his brother, but their happiness couldn’t last forever.
It soon became clear that Damon had Severide as his role model. Severide was his role model, and Damon was willing to do anything to impress his brother. However, that comes at a cost when he disobeys Stella Kidd’s direct orders during a call in episode 2. As his lieutenant, Damon is supposed to listen to Kidd, but he goes against protocol, making it clear that he has no respect for her. Severide is forced to choose between his stubborn wife and his immature brother. Unfortunately, for Damon, he has to face the consequences of his actions, which means Firehouse 51 in Chicago Fire season 13. After Kidd demands that Damon be put back on the floating rescue team, Pascal instead scolds the lieutenant for her high turnover rate on Truck 81, pondering whether she should be the one to leave Firehouse 51. However, by the end of the hour, the new head of Firehouse 51 realizes how good Kidd is at her job. Mouch vouches for Kidd and gives Pascal proof that she’s a great lieutenant and leader. As a result, Pascal fired Damon in Chicago Fire season 13, episode 3. Damon was furious with Severide (since he was the one who told Kidd about his insubordination) and compared him to their abusive father, Benny Severide. However, Damon came to terms with his feelings after an episode and finally talked to Severide. Their conversation did not result in Damon getting his job back—not even hinting at the possibility of returning to the prestigious fire department. So Damon officially left Firehouse 51 at the end of Chicago Fire season 13, episode 4. Despite Damon saying that Severide was like Benny, Severide still spoke well of him at his new fire department in Chicago Fire season 13, episode 4. When Damon learned what Severide had done (and after he was offered a permanent position at the department), he reached out to Severide. Damon apologized for his words and actions, and Severide accepted. Damon’s story still seems unfinished in Chicago Fire season 13, and it won’t end until he begs Kidd for forgiveness. Severide takes his brother to Benny’s old fire department to show him their father’s medal. He explains that Benny was a great firefighter but neglected everything else in his life, and Severide is determined not to be like him by continuing to be there for Damon. Benny eventually stops ruining Severide’s life at Chicago Fire, and while Damon is nice to Severide, he hasn’t spoken to Kidd since he was fired.
