Nicola Coughlan’s Response to the ‘Plus-Size Heroine’ Label: What’s the Story Behind It?

No one can break Nicola Coughlan’s confidence, not even body-shamers!

The actress, who bared a lot of skin in a steamy scene in Bridgerton season 3 with Luke Newton, has hit back at those who call her “brave” for being vulnerable.

“Don’t call me brave. I have a pair of cleavage. There’s nothing brave about it, it’s just me showing them off,” she told TIME. Coughlan went on to add, “I’m a couple of sizes shorter than the average woman in the UK and I’m considered a ‘plus-size heroine,'” she said. “To just focus on my appearance is reductive and boring.” The actress further admitted that she “worked hard” to be in season three of Bridgerton and she won’t let anyone comment on her appearance.

“I barely see my family and friends, and people just say, ‘But your body’… I don’t see that as a good thing,” Nicola Coughlan said. She added, “If I suddenly became a ballerina and lost a bunch of weight, would you not like me anymore?” she asked, calling the discussion in general “insane and insulting.”

All three seasons of Bridgerton are available on Netflix, along with the previous spinoff, Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story.
