What’s Coming in ‘SEAL Team’ Season 8 — And Will It Be Resurrected?
[Warning: The following contains major spoilers for the SEAL Team series finale, “The Last Word.”] SEAL Team ended its seven-season run with a hopeful finale that made it easy to imagine where these characters could go next without another tragic loss. But what if there was more?
Much of season seven saw Jason (David Boreanaz) grappling with what he’d done as a result of the war, leading him to meet the wife of the first man he killed in Afghanistan. We didn’t see that conversation—instead, he relayed it to Ray (David Boreanaz) and Sonny (A.J. Buckley)—and that’s because, as executive producer Spencer Hudnut told TV Insider, the original plan, before knowing this was the final season, was to end with Jason going to see his wife with Mandy (Jessica Paré).
“If we were to come back in Season 8, they would find themselves in serious trouble where the group needs to figure out how to come together and get out of that trouble,” he revealed.
Hudnut also has plans for Omar (Raffi Barsoumian) and Drew (Beau Knapp) in season eight. He wants to take Omar on a journey to try to reconnect with his son, and there’s more backstory to Drew that wasn’t in this season.
“It’s just the economics and what happens to a show after Season 7. I think when we were breaking this season, we knew there was no world where everyone was going to come back. And so I think you’ll notice that in this season, Drew is obviously a big part of the first half of the season, but we started to really dive into Omar at the end of the season, to really make people want to learn more about him so that when we come back in the next season maybe, Omar and Drew can continue, because there’s a lot of work to be done if some of the other characters don’t come back,” the EP explained. “We’re just trying to keep the show going as long as we can, but we’re happy with what we leave people with if this is the end.”
Could these characters return in some way in the future? Revivals have become more common (and there was even talk of a movie at one point during the show’s run).
“Never say never. I told people all season, the first show I ever worked on [Unforgettable] was canceled three times before it finally ended,” Hudnut said. “I was like, this is the first time, so I’m ready. I’m ready to do Season 8 here. But David has said he’d be open to it. I’m happy with where we leave these characters.”
He continued, “I love working with this cast. I love working with this crew. I love working with my writing team, and so any reason to bring that group back together, I’m up for it.”
