What does Connie Britton’s return to ‘9-1-1’ mean for the finale’s plot?

Connie Britton returns in the dramatic two-part season 3 finale of 9-1-1, Fox confirmed in a promo that aired after Monday’s episode.

The 30-second teaser teases the latest emergencies facing Athena (Angela Bassett), Bobby (Peter Krause) and the crew, including a heart-stopping one: a catastrophic train crash that puts hundreds of people at risk, including Athena.

“There’s been a train crash,” Abby ominously calls out over the phone. “This is a mass casualty.”

ET recently caught up with 9-1-1 star Oliver Stark, who plays Buck, who is romantically linked to Abby. The actor played coy when asked if Britton might eventually return, alluding to the unfinished business between the two former lovers.

“My character goes on this journey to reunite an older firefighter with his lost love [in episode 16], and that brings up some emotions and makes him question what he thinks about life,” Stark said earlier this month. “And, you know, it could set someone up to come back — whether that’s a good thing or a bad thing — or it needs to be done the right way.”

Showrunner Tim Mineart told ET at the end of season 2 that there are no plans for Britton to return. “Connie signed on for a year and that was always the plan. But as I’ve said many times, she’s always welcome back,” he said. “I would love to see Abby come back. And I would love to see Abby standing over Buck’s bed when he wakes up from surgery.”

Britton played Abby, a 9-1-1 operator, for one season before leaving the show.
