The 9-1-1 Trilogy Ends With a Hero’s Sacrifice — and a Really Awkward Moment for Buck
The look of pure, unadulterated annoyance on Buck’s face in the final moments of Thursday’s 9-1-1 episode is one we’ll remember forever… or at least until next week.

The first three episodes of the show ended on a hilariously awkward note for Buck and Gerrard, the latter of whom returned as captain of the 118 after a brief hospital stay. Since saving Gerrard from that flying chainsaw, Buck had been extremely nervous, believing that Gerrard would be angry with him for accidentally causing his concussion.

Turns out, it was the opposite. Instead of greeting Buck with another condescending remark, Gerrard gave him… a hug. “Do you feel these hands?” Gerrard asked, as if there was a normal answer to that question. “Here I am, taking you under my wing.” And that’s exactly how the episode ends, with Buck—and the audience—feeling utterly confused by this change in Gerrard’s character.

Of course, there’s a possible upside to this development. If Buck becomes Gerrard’s new protégé, albeit reluctantly, he might be the next member of the 118 to grow a mustache! (Speaking of which, did anyone else think Eddie’s mustache would get more screen time? This season may be new, but it’s still underutilized. We deserve an “Eddie’s Mustache Begins.”) Oh my gosh, what else happened this week? Nothing too out of the ordinary. The hour started with Athena effortlessly landing a commercial plane on the busiest freeway in Los Angeles, and ended with Bobby and Athena casually looking into the blacklist of sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein. We’re pretty sure Athena hasn’t slept in days at this point.

In the chaos of the investigation, Dennis takes a bullet for Athena, eventually getting her approval for early release. We’re pretty sure he wouldn’t have survived the shot, but we’re glad he did. The last thing Athena needs is more ghosts in her life.

Thursday’s episode also sees a showtime focusing on Brad (played by Callum Blue), the actor on Bobby’s show who insists on joining him on the fire truck. Not only does he prove to be much more helpful than we expected, but his first meeting with Buck makes for a hilariously surreal moment when Buck is surprised to discover that the actor on TV’s biggest firefighter show is actually — wait for it — British. Go figure.
