Details on the new 9-1-1 are still slow to come, as it was only announced on October 1, 2024. However, Murphy told Variety that “we’re hoping to air sometime next fall.”
That means viewers could see the next 9-1-1 show as early as September 2025, and with 9-1-1: Lone Star coming to an end, there’s a gaping hole in the broadcast schedule waiting for it.
What do we know about the new 9-1-1 spinoff?
The short answer: not much. The creators have yet to reveal the setting for the new 9-1-1 or whether it will differ significantly from the original show or Lone Star. So far, we don’t even know the show’s name.
“[…] We’re launching a new show in a new city that I can’t name, but it’s exciting,” Murphy said in an interview with Variety. “9-1-1 moved to ABC and suddenly became the biggest show on Thursday nights. Obviously they’re interested in that, so we’re going to give them another one that I really like.”
Murphy is referring to 9-1-1 moving from Fox to ABC, where it continues to thrive to this day. It’s also been a top contender on Hulu’s Top 15 in recent weeks, so you don’t need cable to watch.
Where will the new 9-1-1 spinoff be filmed?
That’s the million-dollar question at this point. In their article about the new spinoff, Deadline theorized that the new addition to the series could take place in Las Vegas. That’s where the original CSI was filmed, after all. New York City seems to be another popular choice, especially since neither the original LA-based show nor the Austin-based Lone Star are on the east coast. Ryan Murphy likes to film in New Orleans, so that’s a potential option, as is Atlanta, which is notoriously inexpensive to film in.
However, if you’re thinking about potential 9-1-1 calls and plot points unexplored, it seems like the new series would benefit from a colder climate and potential snow-related incidents. For that reason, Denver, Boston, or Detroit could all be strong options. Perhaps the show’s location will be announced soon if they’re aiming for a 2025 release date.
The original show was full of familiar faces, like Angela Bassett, Peter Krause, and Jennifer Love Hewitt. Lone Star’s cast isn’t huge, but it does have Rob Lowe as the headliner. So it makes sense that the creators would want to attach at least one A-list star to the new spinoff, since that’s worked for them in the past.

According to Ryan Murphy, Lone Star was canceled because “it wasn’t working financially. This was a Disney company that was on Fox and never worked. And we had a long time with it.”
