New Big Bang Theory Spinoff Recruits Original Series Stars, Hinting at Plot

The Big Bang Theory spinoff series in the works at Max has finally gotten a major update. It has been revealed who may be leading the series, which may hint at the potential setting for the new show.

Per Deadline, the new series has recruited Kevin Sussman, Brian Posehn, and Lauren Lapkus to star in the Big Bang Theory spinoff on Max. Notably, the show is still in its early stages and hasn’t been officially ordered to series just yet. The show was first announced in April 2023, and it was reported at the time that the spinoff comes from Big Bang Theory co-creator Chuck Lorre. No details were revealed about which characters the new series may be following.

It’s believed that Sussman, Posehn, and Lapkus will be headlining the spinoff series, coinciding with rumors that it was planned to be a sitcom following two males and one female lead. This harkens back to the early days of The Big Bang Theory, when Sheldon (Jim Parsons), Leonard (Johnny Galecki), and Penny (Kaley Cuoco) were at the heart of the series before other characters became more heavily featured.

Casting Sussman, Posehn, and Lapkus in the lead roles also makes it most likely that the spinoff series will be set primarily in the comic book store that was featured in the original series. Sussman is known to longtime fans for his role as Stuart Bloom after he was ifrst introduced in the second season of The Big Bang Theory. Because he became a fan favorite recurring character, Stuart became a series regular starting in Season 8, remaining a big part of the series until it concluded with Season 12.

Lapkus, meanwhile, served as a recurring star for the final two seasons of the show. She played Denise, an assistant at the comic book store who later became Stuart’s girlfriend. Posehn joined the series in Season 6 and became a recurring star in Season 10. He played Bert Kibbler, a geology professor who similarly became fan favorite. In the series finale, Bert memorably looked after Raj’s dog, Cinnamon.

Another Big Bang Theory Franchise Series Debuts This Month

The big update on the Max spinoff comes shortly before the arrival of another new series set in the same world as The Big Bang Theory and Young Sheldon. Called Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage, the new series will be set shortly after the events of Young Sheldon, long before The Big Bang Theory. That show will primarily follow Montana Jordan and Emily Osment as the titular characters after they previously debuted in Young Sheldon. That show premires on Oct. 17 on CBS.

A premiere date hasn’t yet been set for the untitled Big Bang Theory spinoff on Max.
