In a surprising turn of events, CBS has reversed its decision to cancel S.W.A.T., renewing the Shemar Moore-led police drama for a seventh and final season just three days after the initial announcement.
Originally, the series was set to end after its sixth season finale on May 19. However, following strong viewer feedback, CBS has agreed to produce 13 additional episodes for the upcoming season.
“We have listened to our viewers and their outpouring of passion for S.W.A.T., and we are pleased to announce its renewal for a final season,” said CBS Entertainment president Amy Reisenbach and Sony Pictures TV Studios president Katherine Pope in a joint statement. They emphasized the importance of giving the show’s loyal audience closure for its storylines and characters.
“S.W.A.T. has garnered a devoted following over six seasons, and we appreciate the hard work of the cast, writers, producers, and crew who have contributed to its success. We look forward to its return next season,” the statement continued.
Shemar Moore, the show’s star, had expressed his frustration over the initial cancellation. In a passionate Instagram video, he questioned the decision, stating, “It makes no sense… We’re the best show on Friday night at 8 o’clock for CBS. We’ve done everything that was asked for.” He remained hopeful that the series would continue, urging fans to “make some noise” to show their support.
Executive producer Shawn Ryan noted that the evolving landscape of the industry can make it challenging for even successful shows to secure additional seasons. “The economics of the business are changing,” he explained.
As S.W.A.T. prepares for its final chapter, fans can look forward to more thrilling episodes filled with the action and emotional depth they’ve come to love.
