Why did Miranda Rae Mayo call the season 13 opener a ‘fireworks show’?

Chicago Fire season 12 ended with a cliffhanger — and according to Miranda Rae Mayo, the drama will continue in season 13. “We have a crazy call that the paramedics have to investigate,” Mayo, 34, told Us Weekly exclusively about the first episode, which aired on Wednesday, September 25. “The paramedics have to investigate to find out what really happened on the call because there’s some speculation and it’s very dark.”

The actress, who plays Lt. Stella Kidd, teased a “tough” start to season 13, revealing that the paramedic call left her “gasping” when she read the script.

While paramedic Violet Mikami (Hanako Greensmith) and her new partner, Lyla Novak (Jocelyn Hudon), will be hard at work in the premiere, Mayo says the last season’s leftovers will also be a focus.

Come season 13, Chief Dom Pascal (Dermot Mulroney) will be in charge — and he’s “tough on Kidd,” according to Mayo.

“It’s a fireworks show,” Mayo teased of “the first time we get to see Pascal in action.”

He’s very serious,” she revealed. Mayo pointed out that for Kidd and her longtime Firehouse 51 co-workers, “there’s a sense of pride in the fire department,” which Pascal threatens.

However, one of Mayo’s favorite storylines of season 13 involved Kidd’s husband, Kelly Severide (Taylor Kinney), and his newfound brother, Jack Damon (Michael Bradway). Last season, Damon caused a stir when he was revealed to be Severide’s half-brother and the secret son of their late father, Benny (Treat Williams).
