9-1-1 is coming to another city, with a new spinoff recently confirmed by co-creator Ryan Murphy. While details about where the next 9-1-1 will take place are still unknown, fans have plenty of ideas about what they’d like to see.
In an October 1 report from Variety, Murphy shared, “[Series co-creator] Tim Minear and I are working on a new spinoff that we’re actually writing right now and we’re hoping to air next fall.”
“Sadly, we all love Lone Star, but the financials are not right. It’s a Disney company that used to be on Fox, and it was never going to work. And we had a long time with it. So now we’re launching a new show in a new city that I can’t name, but it’s exciting. And 9-1-1 moved to ABC and suddenly became, I think, the biggest show on Thursday night, and they obviously had an interest in that, so we’re giving them another show that I really love.”
No details have been released about the location or premise. This will be the third show in the 9-1-1 franchise, with the original set in Los Angeles and 9-1-1: Lone Star, which is in its fifth and final season, based in Austin, Texas.
What will the new 9-1-1 spinoff be about?
There are plenty of theories about where the upcoming 9-1-1 could be set and what the show will be about. In a Reddit discussion about the spinoff, fans had some great ideas for locations and characters. Check out the theories below.
Location: Las Vegas What better setting for emergencies than Las Vegas? From the glitz of the Strip, to the endless crowds of tourists, and the desert landscape that experiences flash floods, there’s no shortage of action and drama to be had.
One fan asked, “It’s going to be Las Vegas, right?” Another replied, “I think so. I remember reading an article about ABC eyeing a potential spinoff. They said a lot of cities were being considered, but only one was named Vegas.”
There’s also a lot of love for colder climates, where perhaps more weather-related incidents could play a role in the show. “Hopefully somewhere cold like Boston or Minnesota!” One fan in the Reddit discussion said, “It’s going to be Boston.” Another mentioned, “It’s going to be Boston.”
One 9-1-1 fan said Boston would make sense, sharing, “It already has a connection to the OG, and with Eli, Maddie, and Chimney’s history in Boston, they could easily set up some crossovers eventually.”
One fan said they could definitely see a spinoff set in Boston, but also hoped they’d change up the location even more. “I hope it’s a city with more of a different terrain. Boston would be like another big city with colder weather,” they noted. “I want them to do it in an interesting place where the first responders’ needs are very different.”
Of course, there’s more to this spinoff than just the location — will it be a new cast or the potential to bring some familiar faces into the fold?
One 9-1-1 fan noted that centering the show in Boston or New York City could work, character-wise. “We haven’t seen anything in the Northeast yet – there’s that connection with TK and Owen/Eli, Chim and Maddie, and both are places with much colder winters than Texas and California.”
Others discussed the possibility of Lone Star characters getting some love in the spinoff. “I wonder if they’ll bring some of the OG characters into the spinoff,” one asked, with another responding, “Honestly, I hope they recycle some of the Lone Star characters.”
In another Reddit discussion about whether Lone Star characters would be in a spinoff series, one fan noted, “I think this could actually work and maybe give us an excuse to keep a character or two from Lone Star. Like T.K. and Carlos moved to New York and we had 9-1-1: Big Apple or something.”
