“Exciting New Cast Addition Set to Shake Things Up in ‘Will Trent’ Season 3”

The Jane the Virgin actress is set to appear in the recurring role of Marion Alba, Atlanta’s newest assistant district attorney. The character is described as charismatic and confident, and while she and Will get off to a rocky start, they’re quickly brought together to investigate gang crimes in the metro area.

With Will (Ramón Rodriguez) and Angie’s (Erika Christensen) on-again, off-again relationship seemingly over after the explosive season 2 finale (Will arrested her, after all), we’re all wondering if Alba will become Will’s latest love interest in the upcoming season. Details (and spoilers!) ahead.

Will Trent is based on the New York Times bestselling series of novels written by Karin Slaughter. The series centers on Agent Will Trent, a traumatized former foster child who develops special skills as an adult that help him become a great detective. He has the highest solve rate in the fictional Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI), but he still struggles with deep psychological issues related to his abandonment as an infant and abuse as a foster parent.

In addition to the Will Trent books, Slaughter has also signed on for the Grant County series, which focuses on three main characters: Sara Linton, Jeffrey Tolliver, and Lena Adams. Sara Linton’s character transitioned to the Will Trent series in the novel Undone (2009), and she and Will became romantically involved. Since Sara has yet to appear in the TV adaptation, it stands to reason that Will has an Angie-sized void in his love life that this new character could fill perfectly. We’ll see!

Who else is in season 3?
Rodriguez and Christensen will return as Will and Angie in the upcoming Will Trent season. Jake McLaughlin will return as Atlanta homicide detective Michael Ormewood; Sonja Sohn will return as GBI Deputy Director (and Will’s boss) Amanda Wagner; and most importantly, Bluebell the chihuahua will return as Will’s pet dog, Betty.

Karin Slaughter, Howard Deutch, Ellen Marie Blum, Ramón Rodriguez, Oly Obst, Liz Heldens, and Daniel Thomsen will continue to executive produce, with Heldens and Thomsen serving as co-executive producers.

When and where can we watch Will Trent season 3?
Although the series was renewed for a third season in April 2024, the show is not scheduled to air in ABC’s fall season. Instead, Will Trent and another crime drama, The Rookie, will return and air back-to-back in January 2025. Disney Television Group chairman Craig Erwich told The Hollywood Reporter, “Both of those shows are running at full steam, both in terms of the ratings and the performance we’re seeing on Hulu. We’re launching them in January, when we have big advertising platforms around New Year’s Eve, as well as college football and a big Christmas slate. Having those shows not go on hiatus is just the best way to continue to grow them, which is our goal.”

While January is a long time to wait for more Will Trent action, the good news is that we’ll likely have 18 full episodes airing in a row that are constantly being shifted or interrupted by the show’s delays. As usual, new episodes air Tuesdays on ABC and they’ll be available to stream the following day on Hulu.
