Exploring the Future of ‘Queen Charlotte’ Season 2: What Does Shonda Rhimes Reveal?

Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story, creator Shonda Rhimes has given an update on the possibility of the show returning for further seasons. The prequel to Netflix’s hit period drama Bridgerton, the six-episode historical drama focuses on the rise to power of Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz (India Amarteifio) in the late 18th century. Rhimes is the show’s head writer and executive producer, and Queen Charlotte has received positive reviews. The show’s success, which has reportedly exceeded Netflix’s expectations, has led to calls for further seasons.

In an interview with Variety, Rhimes discussed the show’s future and refused to rule out the possibility of a Queen Charlotte season 2. However, the creator did reveal one condition: the story must be true. Check out her comments below: I feel like I’m talking to Netflix! They ask me that question all the time! I’m still trying to figure it out. I don’t want to tell a story that doesn’t need to be told — you know what I mean? I don’t want to do a second season of ‘Queen Charlotte,’ and you’re like, ‘Oh, that wasn’t that great.’

So it’s going to be a while before we have the confidence to pursue a sequel to Queen Charlotte, but the odds are looking good.

It’s understandable that Netflix would want a second season of the hit spinoff. Like the main series, Queen Charlotte has been a huge streaming hit, breaking into the global top 10 as the most-watched English-language series and holding the No. 1 spot for three weeks. The show peaked at 158.68 million hours in its second week. It’s clearly been a huge success, similar to Bridgerton seasons 1 and 2, which currently rank as the two most popular seasons on Netflix ever.

Queen Charlotte, on the other hand, ends with the royal couple reuniting after facing obstacles at the beginning of their marriage. This specifically includes how the queen deals with King George’s (Corey Mylchreest) mental health, which was briefly hinted at in Bridgerton. The show ends happily with Charlotte pregnant with her second child and with King George. However, given where the prequel left off with its story, this leaves the door open for further exploration of the couple’s marriage after this point.
