New 9-1-1 Spinoff Debuts, Ryan Murphy Reacts to Lone Star Cancellation
While one door has closed with the cancellation of 9-1-1: Lone Star, another will soon be broken down. Series co-creator Ryan Murphy has confirmed that a new 9-1-1 spinoff is in the works.
Created by Murphy, Brad Falchuk, and Tim Minear, the procedural drama first premiered on Fox in 2018 before moving to ABC for its seventh season. It then spawned a spinoff in 2020—titled Lone Star—and ran for four seasons, with Season 5 recently premiering.
Unfortunately, Lone Star’s fifth season will be its last.
What Has Ryan Murphy Said About Plans to Expand 9-1-1?
Murphy told Variety that “Tim Minear and I are working on a new spinoff that we’re actually writing and we’re hoping to air next fall.”
Regarding Lone Star’s cancellation, Murphy said: “It’s sad, we all love ‘Lone Star,’ but the financials just don’t work out. It’s a Disney property that used to be on Fox, and it never worked out. And we had a long run with it. So now we’re launching a new show in a new city that I can’t name, but it’s exciting. And ‘9-1-1’ moved to ABC and suddenly became, I think, the biggest show on Thursday night. They obviously had interest in that, so we’re going to give them another show that I really like.”
Further details about the new spinoff have yet to be announced.
9-1-1 follows the lives of LA’s first responders, including dispatchers, police officers, paramedics, and firefighters. The series features people like Angela Bassett, Peter Krause, Oliver Stark, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Rob Lowe, Brian Michael Smith, and many more.
