“How Will ‘SEAL Team’ Conclude? Jason’s Struggle and the Big Questions Awaiting Answers”

Heading into the series finale of SEAL Team (premiering on Paramount+ on Sunday, October 6), Bravo 1, Jason Hayes (David Boreanaz) has been given a mission from above that separates him from his brothers: take down traitor Curtis (Mac Brandt). Drew (Beau Knapp), who does his best work in the moral gray area, accompanies him.

“As he tells Ray, there’s a reason Jason realizes why they gave him this mission—because the higher-ups, like how Jason sees himself, see him as a killer,” executive producer Spencer Hudnut told TV Insider. “Also, Curtis is a character that [Jason] sees a lot of himself in, mostly worse. And so I think he’s definitely taking the gravity of the situation into account.”

“I mean, to take out another American, but also someone who Jason, I think, recognizes as having been failed by the same system that Swanny [Tony Curran] has, the system that has failed so many of Jason’s other teammates, there’s a part of Jason that knows Curtis very deeply and I think it would be very contradictory to be the one to take out someone who’s really been left behind,” he continued.

But does Jason feel like he can actually take out Curtis? That’s the question.

How will ‘SEAL Team’ end? Predictions for the 8 main characters “I think Jason feels like he’s the one who should do it,” Hudnut said. “I think he’s the one who has so much blood on his hands, what does it mean for him to kill another person? And again, I think the command—I mean the decision to actually take Curtis out came from above, but the fact that Jason was the one tasked with doing that, I think for Jason it almost validates how he sees himself.”

Considering how the series as a whole ended after seven seasons (and two homes, CBS, then moving to streaming), the title of the finale, “The Last Word,” is fitting.

“A lot of this season is about, is war the last word? That’s on Ray [Neil Brown Jr.]’s mind, obviously on Jason’s mind. I think they’re all grappling with what comes next,” Hudnut explains. “We’ve created a team where everyone feels most comfortable on the battlefield. And whether they have the opportunity to try to feel at home away from the battlefield and whether they can achieve that is a big question for all of them.”
