In 2023 and 2024, the cast, crew, and fans of CBS’s S.W.A.T. experienced a tumultuous year, marked by near-cancellations and unexpected renewals. Initially set to conclude with its sixth season, the action-packed series featuring Shemar Moore faced uncertainty until it was ultimately saved and greenlit for a Season 8 return in the 2024 TV lineup. While navigating such intense decisions is no easy feat, CBS Entertainment President Amy Reisenbach finds the process invigorating.
At the Banff World Media Festival in Alberta, Canada, Reisenbach shared insights about the network’s evolving strategy, including plans for the 2026-2027 season and a departure from the traditional pilot season approach. This bold mindset has played a crucial role in the rollercoaster journey of S.W.A.T., which has seen two cancellations followed by two surprise renewals.
“I thrive in competitive situations that push us to secure outstanding projects,” Reisenbach stated. “Every negotiation is unique, often a roller coaster. I genuinely enjoy it. Our goal is always to find the best outcomes for everyone involved. S.W.A.T. continues to perform well, and we’re proud to have Shemar Moore leading the charge.”
The show’s uncertain fate was not solely in Reisenbach’s hands; significant negotiations with Sony Pictures Television over licensing fees had a major impact. While the specifics of the final agreements remain unclear, the outcome indicates the president’s competitive spirit played a vital role in securing another 22-episode season.
Questions about S.W.A.T. arose ahead of the May 2023 cancellation announcements, initially leading to its demise due to financial constraints. However, just days later, CBS reversed its decision. The show began streaming on Netflix, garnering significant viewership, which likely bolstered confidence for its return.
Despite the renewal being touted as a “final season,” concerns resurfaced in early 2024. Yet, a confident Shemar Moore believed in the show’s continuation, and his optimism proved correct when CBS once again changed course in mid-April, leaving the series open-ended. This decision was crucial, as the Season 7 finale had been crafted with future storylines in mind, potentially leaving fans frustrated without the renewal.
While Reisenbach enjoys the negotiation process, she acknowledges the difficult decisions faced by CBS, especially in light of canceling popular shows like So Help Me Todd and NCIS: Hawai’i. “These are incredibly tough calls,” she expressed. “As a TV fan myself, I empathize with viewers who are disappointed by these endings. Ultimately, our responsibility at CBS is to make those hard choices.”
