David Boreanaz’s SEAL Team Replacement Show Continues His Biggest Career Trend

David Boreanaz’s new show after SEAL Team will be different, following the pattern of his diverse roles.
The actor has avoided being pigeonholed by starring in contrasting TV shows like Buffy, Bones, and SEAL Team.
Boreanaz’s upcoming project will showcase a different side of his talent.
SEAL Team is coming to an end with season 7, and David Boreanaz has already booked his next TV show, continuing one of the actor’s most impressive career trends. The CBS/Paramount+ military drama, created by Benjamin Cavell, debuted in September 2017, six months after the series finale of Bones. SEAL Team centers on one of the Navy SEALs’ most elite units—Bravo Team, a sub-unit of the U.S. Navy’s Special Warfare Development Group—and Boreanaz plays the team’s leader, Jason Hayes.

SEAL Team season 7 is expected to premiere in late 2024 on Paramount+.

The military drama aired for four and a half seasons on CBS before moving to Paramount+ for the remaining episodes. The first four episodes of season 5 premiered on CBS before SEAL Team moved to streaming, where it was renewed for two more seasons and canceled, with the seventh season being its finale. The cast of SEAL Team has already finished filming season 7, meaning Boreanaz is free to work on other projects, including a series he’s apparently been watching a lot of The Sopranos for.

While he’s been hesitant to reveal details surrounding Boreanaz’s next series after SEAL Team ends with season 7, he did drop some interesting information in June 2024 (via Variety). Boreanaz said, “I’m watching a lot of The Sopranos right now.” When asked if his upcoming show would feature the Mafia, the actor replied, “No. You know, I like suits, I like style, I like cars.” Based on these few clues, it seems like Boreanaz’s next project (which he’ll write, possibly produce, and star in) will be completely different from SEAL Team, further diversifying his filmography.

Boreanaz’s previous four TV roles have all been polar opposites, and that trend will continue with his next role. After playing Angel, a vampire, in Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel, Boreanaz moved on to Bones, where he played an FBI agent. After Bones ended, the actor signed on to play a Navy SEAL in SEAL Team. None of his roles or TV shows have been comparable, and that pattern continues with Boreanaz’s new show, which is the opposite of SEAL Team.

Boreanaz was smart to develop a series that was completely different from SEAL Team because it helped him avoid being pigeonholed. Actors don’t like being pigeonholed, and if Boreanaz continued to work on supernatural, police procedural, or military shows, he would be limiting his range. The actor’s constant role-changing allowed him to keep his career fresh and, as a result, keep his audience engaged. Boreanaz could easily be pigeonholed as a vampire after playing Angel for so long, but he’s been able to diversify his repertoire with successful, contrasting series like SEAL Team.
