In a bittersweet revelation, Andrew Dettmann, executive producer of S.W.A.T., shared the emotional journey surrounding the show’s recent uncancellation for a second time. While the news was largely positive, the departure of beloved characters cast a shadow over the excitement.
As the series wrapped up its seventh season, fans witnessed Hondo (Shemar Moore) say goodbye to three key members of the 20 Squad: Street (Alex Russell), who transferred to Long Beach, Luca (Kenny Johnson), forced to retire after an off-duty injury, and Deacon (Jay Harrington), who chose to retire. Though Harrington remains with the show, Russell and Johnson had poignant farewell episodes that left fans reeling.
Dettmann expressed his hopes for the future, stating, “I would love to see them back. The one heartbreaking thing was giving Street and Alex that goodbye, and giving Luca that heartbreaking goodbye that Kenny played so well.” He added, “We wrote them out, but I still hope to bring them back.”
Looking ahead to Season 8, Dettmann hinted at potential storylines that could allow for Russell’s return. “There’s no reason why LAPD couldn’t collaborate with Long Beach PD on a case that could bring Street back,” he shared. He also expressed interest in having Russell direct an episode, and he remains optimistic about both Russell and Johnson making future appearances.
Russell’s farewell episode left viewers anticipating a significant moment in his character’s life, as Street planned to propose to Chris (Lina Esco), who departed after five seasons. Dettmann acknowledged the importance of that moment, saying, “It would be hard to imagine their wedding without everyone there,” indicating that the team’s celebration would be a meaningful event if it came to fruition.
In contrast, Hondo and Nichelle (Rochelle Aytes) entered the new season as a married couple, following a proposal that wrapped up Season 6. Dettmann explained the decision to skip the wedding, believing it would be more impactful to reveal their commitment without repeating the previous moment.
The excitement for Season 8 stems from the show’s unexpected second chance after initially being canceled following Season 6. Dettmann described the wrap party for Season 6 as “very weird,” filled with uncertainty. However, the chance to conclude Season 7 with 13 episodes felt like a blessing, allowing for a proper farewell.
With the show’s ratings improving, Dettmann and Moore began to entertain the possibility of a Season 8. “Getting a pickup for Season 8 just felt like yet another blessing,” he said, highlighting the positivity that has enveloped the cast and crew since the uncancellation.
As fans eagerly anticipate the new season, the question remains: how will S.W.A.T. bring back Street, Luca, and Chris? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
