CBS canceled Blue Bloods before its fourteenth season, but updates on how Tom Selleck’s Frank Reagan story will end suggest that the story may not end after the series ends. The procedural drama, created by Robin Green and Mitchell Burgess, follows an Irish Catholic family (the Reagans), many of whom work in law enforcement, in New York City. Blue Bloods debuted in 2010 and, as evidenced by its 14-season run, became a hit for CBS for most of its years on the network. However, the series was deemed too costly, leading to Blue Bloods’ cancellation.
CBS split Blue Bloods season 14 into two halves, with the first part airing from February to May 2024 and the second part airing later in 2024. Of course, many were upset by the cancellation news, leading to a fan campaign to save Blue Bloods. Unfortunately, it didn’t work out, and, as of this writing, the show is still set to end with season 14. The good news is that it’s not over until it’s over, and the showrunner’s recent comments about how Blue Bloods ends may inspire some hope that the series might continue, after all.
In an interview with TV Insider following the release of Blue Bloods season 14, episode 10, showrunner Kevin Wade shed some light on how Frank Reagan’s story ends on the CBS series. When asked if Frank would seriously consider leaving his job as New York City Police Commissioner, Wade said: “I’m pretty sure Frank will continue to do his job until the end of the series. We’re not really going to pursue that path because the show is built on him being the New York City Police Commissioner. So to go around the last mile, if this is the last mile, I don’t know what he’ll be doing at the hardware store or having coffee with his old friends during the day. I always have to look at the things that make the story. The New York Police Commissioner makes the story.
It’s hard to imagine anyone replacing Frank as Police Commissioner on Blue Bloods, and it seems like fans won’t have to. According to Wade, the procedural drama will end with Frank still holding the job he’s had since the show debuted in 2010. While the showrunner’s comments provide viewers with some insight into the future, While the CBS series will end, this quote also proves why there’s still hope for Blue Bloods season 15. Kevin Wade’s Blue Bloods The finale trailer suggests that the show’s storyline could theoretically continue after the finale. The writers appear to be holding on to some ongoing storylines (like Frank’s tenure as New York City Police Commissioner) in case CBS brings the series back for a fifteenth season or a Blue Bloods spinoff. The storylines won’t come to a definitive conclusion (like Frank’s death) that can’t be undone if the show continues. Therefore, Frank’s fate at the end of Blue Bloods bodes well for its future.
