S.W.A.T. is gearing up for Season 8 with some exciting changes! The CBS drama’s 20-Squad is getting a boost with Annie Ilonzeh joining in a recurring role and Niko Pepaj being promoted to series regular as Alfaro.
Season 7, initially touted as the show’s final season, saw the departure of original cast members Alex Russell (Street) and Kenny Johnson (Luca). There was also uncertainty around Deacon (Jay Harrington), who considered retirement to honor a promise to his wife, Annie. Fortunately, by the end of the season, he was able to keep his badge and continue serving.
After being granted “carte blanche” by Hicks, Hondo was encouraged to add two new members to the team. Although Tan had reservations about Alfaro, the new recruit proved his worth in the season finale. With Pepaj’s promotion, fans can expect to see Alfaro as a regular presence in the upcoming season, premiering Friday, Oct. 18.
Ilonzeh, known for her roles in Chicago Fire, Person of Interest, and ABC’s 2011 Charlie’s Angels reboot, will take on the recurring role of Devin Gamble. Born into a crime-ridden L.A. family, Gamble made a name for herself as a rookie in the LAPD. After her father’s arrest, she left for Oakland but will be drawn back to L.A. by Hondo to join the elite ranks of 20-Squad.
Additionally, Rochelle Aytes will step down from her series regular role to join the cast of CBS’ midseason drama Watson, though she is expected to recur as Nichelle.
Despite the show’s revival, showrunner Andrew Dettman indicated that neither Russell nor Johnson is likely to return as regulars in the near future, emphasizing a commitment to the narratives established so far.
