The Good Doctor star Hill Harper announces he is officially running for political office. Premiered in 2017, The Good Doctor follows Freddie Highmore as Dr. Shaun Murphy, a young autistic surgical resident at the prestigious St. Bonaventure Hospital in San Jose. Harper, who plays Dr. Marcus Andrews at the fictional hospital, is one of three series regulars remaining from The Good Doctor season 1 alongside Highmore and Richard Schiff, who plays Dr. Aaron Glassman.
Today, The Good Doctor star Hill Harper announced his candidacy for the United States Senate in Michigan. Watch his full campaign announcement video below:
In Michigan, Harper will be challenged by Representative Elissa Slotkin to replace the retiring Senator Debbie Stabenow. Harper is a graduate of Brown University and Harvard Law School and before The Good Doctor, he was known for his roles as Dr. Sheldon Hawkes in CSI: NY and Agent Spelman Boyle in Limitless.
Will Hill Harper’s Senate Campaign Impact His Future On The Good Doctor?
Harper’s campaign for the US Senate, which requires a massive time commitment, will more than likely impact his future on The Good Doctor. His character, Dr. Marcus Andrews, has had one of the more interesting journeys on the show since he’s held an array of positions, including Chief of Surgery, hospital president, and attending surgeon. The Good Doctor season 7 was renewed by ABC and since the series is primarily filmed in Vancouver, Harper will likely be unavailable to return since his Senate campaign in Michigan should keep him confined to the state for the next several months.
Though Harper just announced his candidacy, it’s been planned for quite some time, and the series has possibly already set up his potential exit. During The Good Doctor season 6 finale, Dr. Marcus Andrews resigns from his position as hospital president, which was likely to set up his upcoming absence from the show, at least for season 7, while Harper commits to his campaign for a senate seat in the state of Michigan. He would be the latest star to exit as Brandon Larracuente left after The Good Doctor season 6 to star in a new show from Dick Wolf.
