One Chicago Fire cast member is shockingly departing from the NBC television show in the upcoming season, and their exit might confirm one couple’s fate. The season 11 finale featured numerous cliffhangers, including Mouch flatlining in the hospital, Stella Kidd leaving the city to search for her husband — Kelly Severide — and take him home, the state of Sam Carver’s love life, and Matt Casey proposing to Sylvie Brett out of the blue. So, when season 12 premieres, the drama series has many narratives to address while also explaining the return of Severide and the exit of one character.
Unfortunately, Chicago Fire fans have had to wait a long time to learn the resolution of the aforementioned cliffhangers due to the work stoppage from the 2023 WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. Following the resolution of both strikes, the show is set to return in early 2024 with new episodes and answers regarding the open-ended questions in the season 11 finale. But fans might already have an inkling about how one cliffhanger is resolved (and the conclusion to one couple’s story) because of one actor’s departure from the NBC series.
Kara Killmer Is Leaving Chicago Fire After Season 11 Cliffhanger
NBC announced in November 2023 that Kara Killmer, who plays Sylvie Brett in Chicago Fire, would exit the show sometime in season 12. It’s unknown what episode will mark her last outing in the drama series, but regardless, the audience will have to say goodbye to Brett in the upcoming season, which consists of 13 episodes. Killmer has starred as Brett since she replaced Lauren German’s Leslie Shay in the season 3 premiere, and her character has been one of the few consistent paramedics at Firehouse 51 ever since. Sadly, that will change in season 12.
Brett has had a handful of love interests over the course of the NBC television show, but her most significant boyfriend was undoubtedly Matt Casey. The two characters had a will they/won’t they situation for many episodes before they finally gave in to their feelings for one another in season 9. Brett and Casey broke up when he had to move to Oregon, and she chose to stay in Chicago. However, Casey returned in Chicago Fire season 11 and proposed to Brett in the finale (even though long distance was still a significant impediment to their relationship).
What Brett’s Chicago Fire Exit Means For Her Relationship With Casey
Following the season 11 finale, it seemed as if Brett’s answer to Casey would be “no” since he had to return to Oregon, and she would still be in Chicago with her newly adopted baby, Julia. But given the recent news surrounding Killmer’s exit from the series, Brett will likely agree to marry Casey, and she and Julia move to Oregon to be with him. Of course, fans will have to wait for the Chicago Fire season 12 premiere to learn the concrete truth, but this seems like the most plausible reason for Brett leaving the show.
