Everything We Know About the ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ Sequels
Stars Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan both said they’d be back for two more films
Will we be getting more Fifty Shades?
All signs point to yes. Fifty Shades of Grey has already shattered box office records, earning $81.7 million domestically and $239.7 million globally, making it the biggest Presidents Day weekend opener ever, according to Variety.
While Universal has not officially given the green light to any sequels, stars Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan both said they’d be back for more.
When asked if they’d be up for two more films on the Today show on Feb. 6, Johnson said that she would be while Dornan added, “That’s definitely the idea.”
Johnson hinted that she is contractually obligated to film the rest of the trilogy in an interview with the U.K.’s Telegraph, saying that she is happy to do the sequels, “which is lucky as I also have to ”
Both Johnson and Dornan are looking forward to developing their characters more in films based on the next two books, Fifty Shades Darker and Fifty Shades Freed.
“In the second book I think Ana becomes a woman,” Johnson told MTV News. “It’s a really interesting thing to play, to figure out the moment in which a person becomes comfortable with themselves.”
Dornan added, “We’ll see different sides of him, so I’m looking forward to exploring that if given the chance.”
One person who likely won’t be back for future films is director Sam Taylor-Johnson. The Hollywood Reporter reports that while Johnson and Dornan have signed on for all three films, Taylor-Johnson only signed on to do the first, and that “there have been no discussions on her returning.”
Taylor-Johnson often clashed with Fifty Shades author EL James, telling THR, “I think both of us felt it was an incredibly painful process.”
With or without Taylor-Johnson, the next two films are sure to be just as steamy as the first.
In Fifty Shades Darker, we find out that it takes less than a week for Ana and Christian to reunite following their bitter breakup at the end of Fifty Shades of Grey, but the star-crossed lovers soon face a new threat: one of Christian’s former submissives has returned – and she has it in for Ana.
In Fifty Shades Freed, a man from Christian’s dark past returns and kidnaps his sister Mia, ransoming her for $5 million. With Christian out of town, it’s up to Ana to save the day.
Of course, there’s also plenty of sex scenes in both books to make the upcoming onscreen sequels just as titillating as the first!
