Chicago Fire Season 12 Finale Reveals A Major Sylvie Brett Change (Breaking A Firehouse 51 Trend)

The Chicago Fire season 12 finale has a major update about Sylvie Brett, revealing that she breaks a Firehouse 51 trend with one change. One Chicago’s shortened year ends with eventful cappers for all three shows. For Chicago Fire, it’s a busy work day for Chief Boden, as he officially moves on from his post to climb the Chicago Fire Department ladder. Considering the importance of Eammon Walker in the first-responder procedural, it makes sense that his exit is the focal point of “Never Say Goodbye,” but the Chicago Fire season 12 finale features so many more revelations beyond that.

Before Boden’s departure, Chicago Fire’s last exit was Derrick Gibson, who was only at Firehouse 51 for a handful of episodes. It was preceded by two long-term personnel also walking away from the Windy City, with the year opening with Blake Gallo’s move, followed by Sylvie’s departure on the heels of her marriage to Matt Casey. The pair’s wedding was the final send-off for both characters, whose love story developed for years. Several episodes since they left, however, the Chicago Fire season 12 finale features an unexpected update, confirming a major change for Sylvie.

Chicago Fire Season 12 Finale Reveals Sylvie Brett Has Taken Matt Casey’s Last Name
Brett Now Goes By Sylvie Casey.

One of the biggest scenes in the Chicago Fire season 12 finale involves Kelly Severide and Stella Kidd having a conversation about starting a family. The discussion is prompted by a text from Sylvie, who is now based in Oregon, with a photo of Baby Julia. Noticeably, her initials on the phone are “SC,” and below it shows that she now goes by Sylvie Casey. Taking her husband’s last name shouldn’t be surprising, since it’s the norm. However, this deviates from Firehouse 51’s tradition where the woman keeps her name after getting married to a fellow major One Chicago character.

Even when Matt married Gabby Dawson in the earlier years of the Chicago Fire , Monica Raymund’s character maintained her last name.

This is the case when Stella Kidd married Kelly Severide two years ago in the Chicago Fire season 10 finale. The same goes when Randy McHolland aka. Mouch tied the knot with Chicago PD’s Trudy Platt. Even when Matt married Gabby Dawson in the earlier years of the Chicago Fire, Monica Raymund’s character maintained her last name. It’s unclear if this trend is done consciously. No official reasoning for this has been provided. Given this, there’s also no set rule regarding the matter. Still, it’s an interesting creative decision, considering Sylvie’s One Chicago predecessors.

Why It’s Easier For Sylvie To Take Matt’s Last Name Than Other Chicago Fire Brides
Sylvie Going By Her Married Name Is An Easier Transition.

Sylvie changing her surname to Casey’s isn’t any indication that her relationship is better than other Chicago Fire marriages. However, she is in a unique position that makes this transition so much easier. Moving to a different state means that she would start a new life, including meeting new people. Introducing herself by her marital name, Sylvie Casey, would be easier compared to someone like Trudy, who has always been known as Platt, especially with the people she works with directly in Chicago PD. The same goes for Stella and Gabby (when she married Matt in Chicago Fire season 5).

In terms of practicality, it would also have been confusing in Firehouse 51 if people shared last names, considering that they use them when referring to someone.

Perhaps the other Chicago Fire brides did change their names legally. The conversation about keeping their original names, which has become the norm in recent years, was never brought up. Given this, it’s more than likely that they all took the traditional route when it comes to this subject. Despite the legality of it, however, they will always be called by their maiden names, since it allows them to maintain their established identity.

In terms of practicality, it would also have been confusing in Firehouse 51 if people shared last names, considering that they typically use them when referring to people that they work with. Currently, only Kelly and Stella are married in the famed firehouse, and it seems like it will still be the case come Chicago Fire season 13. Even then, it would be odd if they used the same last name, especially since they are also the respective leaders of their mini-teams.

Will Sylvie & Matt Ever Return To Chicago Fire?
Both Killmer & Spencer Have The Same Response When Asked About The Matter.

Not everyone gets a happy send-off from the Chicago Fire. Several characters who left in the past had less-than-ideal, sometimes even heartbreaking departures. So Kara Killmer’s character being able to wrap up her time at Firehouse 51 by marrying the love of her life is a big treat. For context, Jesse Spencer had left One Chicago for a couple of years before his marriage. Despite this, Casey continued to return to Chicago Fire due to his unfinished romance with Sylvie. Now that both of their stories are done, there’s no urgent reason for them to revisit the Windy City.

Despite this, Killmer has established that she is open to stepping back into the role of Sylvie. While there’s no concrete plan for her return, considering that Firehouse 51 will likely be busy with its transition on the heels of Chief Boden’s departure, the actor was optimistic that she would find her way back to One Chicago. Previously, Spencer already made it clear that he would always make time for Chicago Fire, and if his multiple cameos after he departed the series are any indication, it’s safe to say that Matt will eventually find his way back to Firehouse 51.

How Matt & Sylvie Can Return To Chicago Fire After They’ve Left
The Chicago Fire Season 12 Finale Keeps The Door Open For The Caseys’ Return.

With both Killmer and Spencer going on record that they are always open to return as Sylvie and Matt in One Chicago, the question now is how the couple can appear in the franchise again. The Chicago Fire season 12 finale offers a clear narrative opening for their potential visit. Sylvie sending Stella a Baby Julia update emphasizes that despite their long-distance set-up, they remain good friends. Because of this, there will always be a reason for the now Oregon-based couple to make their way to the Midwest.

In terms of a more concrete reason, Stella and Kelly having their first kid would be a solid reason for their best friends to make the trip. The same goes if Sam Carver and Violet Mikami’s romance goes the distance, with the pair eventually tying the knot. Aside from personal reasons, it could also have ties to their work, as previously seen with Matt’s returns to Chicago before he and Sylvie got back together. The bottom line is, that there is no scarcity of reasons for the fan-favorite couple to make another appearance even after they’ve both left Chicago Fire.
