An animated series based on Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight saga is now in the works, it has been confirmed. As per a report by Deadline, the Twilight animated series is now a go, with Lionsgate Vice Chairman Michael Burns revealing that the project is in development during a recent Q&A at the Morgan Stanley media conference. You can see what Lionsgate had to say about the Twilight series below…
“We’re going to go out with the Twilight series, an animated series, I think there’ll be a lot of interest in that.”
News of a new adaptation of Twilight first broke last April, and while details of what the show will involve remain under wraps at present, it has been reported that the project was always intended for animation. Meyers, who penned the original series of novels, is “expected to be involved in the television adaptation.” It was also revealed at the time that Sinead Daly, who is best known for the likes of The Walking Dead: World Beyond, Raised by Wolves, Tell Me Lies, Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency, and The Get Down, is attached to write the script.
While you might assume that the animated series will be a new adaptation of the novels and thus a serial reboot of the movies, this is currently still unclear, with the animated series possibly being “an offshoot set within the same universe” or some kind of spinoff. No showrunner, cast, or platform has yet been announced.
How Will the Twilight Saga Fare as Animated Series?
For those somehow unaware (perhaps you yourself are a creature of the night untainted by humanity’s endeavors who has somehow now stumbled on this article), the Twilight saga began life as a series of fantasy romance novels written by author Stephenie Meyer.
The first book was released back in 2005, and introduces readers (and later, audiences) to teenager Bella Swan, a girl who moves to Forks, Washington, from Phoenix, Arizona and falls in love with a 104-year-old vampire named Edward Cullen. The series is comprised of five books, with Twilight being followed by New Moon (2006), Eclipse (2007), Breaking Dawn (2008), Life and Death: Twilight Reimagined (2015), and Midnight Sun (2020).
Lionsgate and Summit Entertainment announced a Twilight series adaptation, but how will the coveted fantasy romance make the transition?
The series has since been adapted into a quintet of movies, beginning with Twilight in 2008 and ending with The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Parts 1 and 2 in 2011 and 2012, respectively. The Twilight saga became a global phenomenon, grossing more than $3 billion worldwide and making superstars of leads Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson.
The Twilight series is just one such literary sensation being given the serial treatment, with a Harry Potter series now also in the works at Max, who plan to release the show in 2026. However, unlike the Twilight animated series, it has been revealed that the Harry Potter show will re-adapt the original series of novels.
