A new series based on Stephanie Meyer’s 2020 book Midnight Sun is coming to Netflix.
The streaming giant confirmed the novel, which retells the events of the first Twilight book from Edward Cullen’s point of view, is being adapted into an animated series. Currently in development, it will see author Stephanie serve as executive producer alongside her Fickle Fish Films partner Meghan Hibbett.
The Twilight series took the world by storm in the late 2000s, spawning a multi-billion film franchise starring Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner. The new series comes 12 years since the final instalment of the Twilight Saga – Breaking Dawn, Part 2 – released in cinemas. The franchise is made up of five films in total: Twilight, New Moon, Eclipse and Breaking Dawn parts one and two.
Joining Stephanie and Meghan as producers on the new series are Wyck Godfrey and Marty Bowen for Temple Hill Entertainment and Erik Feig and Samie Kim Falvey for Picturestart. The Walking Dead and Raised By Wolves’ Sinead Daly will also executive produce and write the series.
It is not yet known who will voice the characters. It is unlikely that any of the main cast, including Kristen and Robert, will reprise their roles for the new series. Robert has made no secret of his dislike for the franchise over the years.
When asked by Moviefone if he would be a fan of Twilight if he didn’t star in it, he said: “I think I am a judgmental and cynical person who would just mindlessly hate it without having seen anything; I just think I’m a bad person.”
Reacting to the Midnight Sun announcement on X, formerly Twitter, one fan wrote: “if you listen closely you can hear me screaming”. A second added: “A win for Twihards” with a crying face emoji. A third celebrated: “A MIDNIGHT SUN ANIMATED SERIES IS THE BEST THING TO HAPPEN”.
One person asked: “Is the world ready for Twilight’s return to pop culture relevance?” as a second said: “This is the best news i’ve ever heard in my life”. Another weighed in: “I’m intrigued! Midnight Sun has so much potential – hope they do it justice!”
Twilight isn’t the first franchise to be turned into an animated series by Netflix. Last year, Scott Pilgrim vs The World was adapted into an eight-part series – and received rave reviews from both fans and critics. Scott Pilgrim racked up an impressive 98 percent Rotten Tomatoes score, while fans were eager for a second series.
More details on Midnight Sun, including a release date, are yet to be revealed. All five Twilight Saga films can be streamed now with a Disney+ subscription.
