Jim Parsons, the beloved actor known for portraying the quirky and hyper-rational Sheldon Cooper on The Big Bang Theory, was just as surprised as fans when his character’s story took an unexpected turn.
What began as an unlikely pairing of Sheldon and Amy, blossomed into a full-fledged romance, culminating in a surprising twist in Season 9. During the 2016 PaleyFest in Los Angeles, Parsons admitted that he never anticipated his character’s journey to unfold in such a dramatic fashion.
Jim Parsons Was Shocked Over Sheldon’s Unexpected Romance Twist
Known for his social awkwardness and reluctance toward conventional relationships, Sheldon Cooper seemed destined to remain single forever in The Big Bang Theory.
However, the introduction of Mayim Bialik’s Amy Farrah Fowler changed everything. Starting in Season 3, their relationship underwent significant development, and by Season 9, the couple finally, as Sheldon would put it, engaged in coitus.
At the 2016 PaleyFest, actor Jim Parsons reflected on the surprising development of Sheldon and Amy’s romantic relationship. He expressed being surprised by such development surrounding his character as he never expected Sheldon to have a s*xual relationship on the show.
“I never thought Shelton would have s*x on this show,” he said during the event, noting his appreciation for how naturally the storyline unfolded, thanks to the writers. The actor also shared a new experience he had in his acting process.
Jim Parsons Praised The Big Bang Theory Writers For Keeping the Progress Organic
While speaking at the PaleyFest, Jim Parsons also praised the show’s writers, for keeping the progress in Sheldon and Amy’s relationship organic and effortless.
Pointing towards Chuck Lorre, Bill Prady, and Steven Molaro, Parsons noted that despite the challenging aspect surrounding the storyline, the show’s writers and showrunners were able to present it beautifully. The actor said,
Any progress we have made as a couple—whether it’s been saying “I love you” or finally doing it or whatever… When it does happen, the way it is written and the way it happens, from the writers is so organic and so easy to do that it is a pleasure, and that’s all credit to them.
Parsons also shared that filming the intimate scenes allowed him to have a new form of communication, calling it the “pillow talk,” which he had never experienced before.
“I discovered a new way of conversing with an actor on this series which was pillow talk and I had never done that in nine years,” he said, humorously adding that he looks forward to more such scenes in the future.
The show’s writers also mentioned that they were very nervous as the moments in Sheldon and Amy’s relationship are carefully planned to maintain Sheldon’s character while advancing the plot.
