Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage executive producer Steve Holland opened up about the creative team’s decision to develop a Young Sheldon spinoff centered around Montana Jordan and Emily Osment’s titular characters. The new series will be a part of CBS’ 2024-2025 Primetime Schedule.
Speaking with Deadline, Holland confirmed that the idea behind Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage series came after they were very impressed with the onscreen chemistry between Jordan and Osment. He revealed that shifting the franchise’s focus to the young couple gave them the freedom to create new stories within the Young Sheldon universe, since unlike the original sitcom, fans don’t know what happened between Georgie and Mandy after Sheldon moves to California to attend college at Caltech. “For us, I think it was really watching Emily and Montana on screen together, and they just had such a great chemistry, and they were so much fun to watch, and it just seemed like watching them spark together seemed exciting and seemed like a fun way to keep telling stories in this world,” he said.
Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage has gotten its first teaser trailer from CBS before its debut in the fall.
Holland continued, “You know, it was tricky with Sheldon going off to college, which we know happens. It’s gonna be hard to do a show with young Sheldon when Sheldon wasn’t there. And so watching Emily and Montana sort of spark together and be so much fun to watch it just felt like a natural progression and also, for us, you know, their story is open-ended. We don’t know what happens. In [Young] Sheldon, we always knew the end of his story from Big Bang Theory. Always knew, you know, he was gonna grow up and get married and win a Nobel Prize. And now, with Georgie and Mandy, the slate’s a little bit clean. We don’t really know what happens to them and their relationship and their lives too much.”
What to Expect From Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage
Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage hails from The Big Bang Theory and Young Sheldon creators and executive producers Chuck Lorre, Steve Molaro and Holland. The spinoff will be led by Jordan and Osment, as they reprise their respective roles as Georgie and Mandy Cooper. Young Sheldon served as Jordan’s first acting project, where he started playing Georgie when he was 14 years old. Following his TV debut, he appeared as Josh Brolin’s son in the 2018 movie The Legacy of a Whitetail Deer Hunter. Meanwhile, Osment first gained recognition for her role as Lily in Disney Channel’s iconic Hannah Montana series, which ran on-air from 2006-2011. After the Miley Cyrus-led sitcom wrapped up, she had recurring roles in Mom and The Kominksy Method.
Iain Armitage reflects on the advice given to him by Jim Parsons for playing Sheldon Cooper.
The official logline for Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage reads, “the sequel follows Georgie and Mandy as they raise their young family in Texas while navigating the challenges of adulthood, parenting and marriage.” At the moment, CBS hasn’t announced the rest of the cast members for the new show. It is also unclear if Jordan and Osment will also be joined by other Young Sheldon characters, such as Mandy’s parents and Annie Potts’ Meemaw, who have become an influential part of their relationship.
Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage is set to debut this coming fall.
