A source close to the Chicago Fire cast confirmed to PEOPLE that star Taylor Kinney will be taking a break from the series. Deadline was first to report the news.

According to Variety, Kinney’s break is due to “personal matters.” No further information was shared.

PEOPLE has reached out to NBC and Kinney for comment.

How Chicago Fire Stars Taylor Kinney and Joe Miñoso Stay Charming, from Zumba to Big Macs The 41-year-old actor has played Lt. Kelly Severide since Chicago Fire debuted in 2012. His character became a staple of the series, eventually appearing in One Chicago’s spinoff series Chicago P.D. and Chicago Med.

When he celebrated Chicago Fire’s 10th anniversary in October 2022, Kinney told Today that the Illinois city is his “home.”

“I’ve been here for over a decade, and this city has been good to me,” he previously said. “I’ve gotten to know it through my work: south, north, west. We did the lake scenes.”

Kinney added, “This city has been good to me. I love this city.”
