Chicago Fire Showrunner Reveals Why Severide Hasn’t Been Promoted
Chicago Fire fans were confused as to why Severide hasn’t been promoted yet, but it turns out there’s a good reason!
The series has seen a lot of changes over the years, with many characters coming and going. Luckily, one constant is Kelly Severide, Taylor Kinney’s firefighter who remains one of the top members of the team. Despite his late father being a highly respected and respected firefighter, Severide has never sacrificed his reputation for solo success.
Severide has shown a talent for fire investigation and is quite good at reading people. He can get involved in everything from various emergencies to his relationship with Stella Kidd (Miranda Rae Mayo), as the couple got married in the season 10 finale.
However, despite his success, Severide hasn’t risen as high as fans would have liked. He remains loyal and although he splits his time between fire investigations, he has yet to advance. With other characters on the show having been promoted over the years, one would think that someone as experienced as Severide would follow suit.
With Boden moving to Deputy Commissioner, Severide has the opportunity to move up in CFD, but it seems unlikely that he will take the opportunity. In fact, there is a good reason for that.
Why hasn’t Severide been promoted on Chicago Fire yet?
In response to a reader question via TVLine, Chicago Fire showrunner Andrea Newman said that the reason Severide hasn’t been promoted is because he doesn’t want to.
“He’s focused on what he’s obsessed with, which is arson and OFI, as well as the team he loves. The higher you go in the hierarchy, the more you have to worry about politics, and Severide doesn’t care about that. He’s a hands-on guy. So arson is always at the forefront of his mind, the possibility of moving to OFI is always at the forefront of his mind, and all of that comes up this season.”
Anyone who watches the show knows that Severide would rather be involved in team activities than sitting behind a desk. He’s uncomfortable with paperwork and likes to help others when they need it. He also sees how being involved in CFD politics has affected his father and others and doesn’t want that to happen to him. He wants to continue to be “one of the guys” rather than their boss.
Severide is also self-aware of his temper and often goes against his boss, which is not appropriate for a captain position. All in all, Severide is more content with his current position than with a promotion that is not right for him.
So fans know that it is not some external issue that is keeping Severide from getting promoted, as he is much more comfortable being a regular firefighter than a superior. While becoming a captain may be a fan’s dream, Severide is content with his position, and that is something that Chicago Fire fans should be concerned about.
