Scott Speedman hints at challenges ahead for his character Nick Marsh as Meredith faces potential heartbreak again

Meredith could be in for heartbreak again.
With just one episodes of season 22 left, Grey’s Anatomy is placing at least two major characters’ lives in danger. The first is Scott Speedman’s Dr. Nick Marsh, the man who finally taught Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) she could love again after McDreamy’s death.
In a preview for the Thursday, May 7 episode “Bridge Over Troubled Water,” an ambulance brings Nick into Grey Sloan Memorial after he’s involved in a bridge collapse, which also endangers the life of Owen (Kevin McKidd).
In an interview with PEOPLE to discuss the R.J. Decker season 1 finale, Speedman, 50, teased that Nick is in a tricky situation in the show’s final episode of the season. “There’s a lot of things stacked against poor old Nick at this point,” he says. “We’ll see. I don’t know. I can’t say anything.”

The R.J. Decker star adds that it’s “always fun to go and be able to shoot Grey’s Anatomy.”
“I love doing this show. I love those people. So we’ll see what happens,” he says.
Speedman first joined Grey’s Anatomy in season 14 before returning in season 18. He’s been a recurring character since, with the show periodically sharing updates on his and Meredith’s life in Boston during visits to Seattle.
The Felicity alum is in the midst of a busy year. His ABC detective series R.J. Decker wrapped it’s first season on Tuesday, April 28, and he recently appeared on Netflix’s Running Point. R.J. Decker has not been renewed for season 2 yet, but the actor is hopeful it will return.

Two actors who are definitely exiting the long-running medical drama are Kim Raver and McKidd, which makes Owen’s perilous situation all the more concerning. As previously announced, their final episode will be the finale, airing May 7.
“Grey’s Anatomy has been a huge chapter of my life, creatively and personally, and I’m deeply grateful for everything the show has given me over the years,” McKidd, 52, previously said in a statement. “Playing Dr. Owen Hunt and directing on the show have both shaped me enormously, and I’ve had the privilege of working with an extraordinary group of people throughout that time.”
Raver, 57, who plays Teddy, shared her own statement, which read, in part, “Playing Dr. Teddy Altman will always hold a dear and special place in my heart. Sixteen years ago, I had the incredible privilege of stepping into this role thanks to the vision of Shonda Rhimes and Betsy Beers. Since that day, it has been a true gift to bring the iconic words of Shonda and our brilliant team of writers to life.”

Camilla Luddington, who stars as Jo, previously told PEOPLE that the season will have multiple cliffhangers.
“It’s not even just one cliffhanger,” she said. “There’s just so many cliffhangers in the finale. Like, even as an actor it’s frustrating. I’m like, ‘Can I get this script for next season? Can I get the premiere?’ “
She added that Teddy and Owen’s exit is emotional, and just hearing the actors read the scenes during the table read brought her to tears. “It’s a really beautiful storyline,” Luddington promised. “I think that they did such an incredible job even just at the table, playing that storyline, I was crying.”
Grey’s Anatomy airs Thursdays at 10 p.m. ET on ABC and streams the next day on Hulu
