A user on Reddit highlighted just how important Mayim Bialik’s portrayal of Amy Farrah Fowler was for The Big Bang Theory.
The Big Bang Theory is still a point of discussion among fans even after five years of its conclusion in 2019. The show initially presented four geeky but brilliant scientists and their next-door neighbor, Penny. As the show progressed, several other characters were added to roaster. The most notable of them being Mayim Bialik, as Amy Farrah Fowler.
As the love interest of Jim Parsons’ Sheldon Cooper, her introduction brought a fresh narrative to the show along with some hilarious moments. Further, Bialik’s performance was so well received that some even claimed that she did the show more favors than the leading pair of Kaley Cuoco and Johnny Galecki.
Mayim Bialik Had a More Significant Role in TBBT Than People Expected
The Big Bang Theory gave the audience numerous heartwarming moments and episodes to ponder over. One such episode was highlighted on Reddit. The user noted that he had never watched the hit sitcom in its entirety, but realized just how amazing Mayim Bialik‘s character Amy Farrah Fowler was during The Shiny Trinket Maneuver (Season 5, Episode 12)
Her portrayal was so great that it had the user in tears, and he ended up re-watching a particular scene multiple time. The scene in question was when Sheldon Cooper showed zero interest in Amy’s work achievement while they were out on a date at the Cheesecake Factory.
This lack of emotion upsets Amy, and she excuses herself from the table. Later, Sheldon and Penny visit a jewelry shop to buy a present for her, and he’s immediately distracted by a pocket watch. After a brief verbal back and forth with Penny, the duo head back to Penny’s, where she calls Amy on a false pretext to hang out.
As soon as she arrives, Sheldon apologizes to her and hands out her present. Initially, she blames him for being shallow, but as soon as she sees the diamond tiara, she’s over the moon and tells Penny repeatedly, “Put it on me!”. While this was one user’s favorite episode, others also chimed in with their favorite scenes from the hit sitcom.
Most of the users agreed that Mayim Bialik brought more hilarious quips to the show. But while the actress went on to become a regular on the show, during the earlier seasons, she was sure her character would be written off from the series.
Mayim Bialik Was Worried About Her Future on The Biag Bang Theory
In a 2022 interview via Entertainment Weekly, the actress detailed the emotions she was going through before she was offered a permanent role on the show. Bialik recalled that she had confided in her manager that she feels her story arc on the show had reached its conclusion.
Further, her character might be written off the sitcom, which was sad given how attached she had become to playing Amy Farrah Fowler.
But this was just the self-generated doubt she had in her mind and was taken aback when her manager called her with amazing news. She added:
She called me back later that day and said, “You’re not going to believe what call I just got. They’d like to offer you a full position as a regular!” [Laughs] Like, no one was sending me covert messages; it was a completely self-generated fear that I wasn’t fitting in or whatever it was. It was completely my own craziness.
Mayim Bialik further added that during the same time she was still teaching neuroscience and piano lessons to manage her expenses. But as soon as she joined the show as a regular, she had to leave that life behind. Not just Bialik, but even Melissa Raunch was not sure about her time on the show.
But all worked out for the better as both actresses not only joined the main cast as regulars but went on to make a huge difference in the entire storyline of the hit sitcom.
