Why The Honeymooners Only Had One Season pd01

Most fans assume that a successful sitcom must have run for many years. But surprisingly, the classic version of The Honeymooners only lasted one season.

The famous 39 episodes aired between 1955 and 1956. Yet decades later, the show is still considered one of the greatest sitcoms ever created.

The reason the series ended had little to do with ratings.

Star and creator Jackie Gleason preferred working on variety television rather than producing a traditional weekly sitcom. He found the intense filming schedule exhausting and worried that the show might lose quality if it continued too long.

Rather than stretching the concept across many seasons, Gleason made a bold decision: he ended the series while it was still at its peak.

Ironically, that decision helped cement its legendary reputation. Because there were only 39 episodes, fans continue watching them over and over, treating each one like a classic.

Today those episodes are often called “The Classic 39.”
