Despite its enormous popularity, The Beverly Hillbillies came to an unexpected end in 1971.
The cancellation shocked many viewers because the show was still drawing millions of weekly viewers. However, television networks at the time were trying to attract younger, urban audiences.
As a result, many rural-themed shows were canceled during a period now known as the “Rural Purge.”
Ironically, several of the programs that were removed — including The Beverly Hillbillies — were still among the most-watched shows on television.
Even decades later, the series remains one of the most iconic sitcoms ever created.
