Why Jesse Lee Soffer Will Not Return to Chicago P.D. in Season 13 — The Real Reason Finally Explained

After months of fan speculation and hopeful theories, it appears Jay Halstead’s return to Chicago P.D. in Season 13 is officially off the table.

Jesse Lee Soffer, who played the beloved Intelligence Unit detective for 10 seasons, has confirmed he will not be returning to the show this season — and the reason is more personal than most fans expected.

In a new, candid interview, Soffer opened up about his decision, putting an end to the constant rumors of a Halstead comeback.

“I love Jay Halstead. He was a huge part of my life and I’m incredibly grateful for everything the show gave me,” Soffer said. “But right now, I need to be honest with myself and with the fans. I won’t be returning to Chicago P.D. in Season 13.”

The Real Reason

According to Soffer, the main reason is family and personal priorities. He and his wife recently welcomed their first child, and he wants to be fully present during this important time in his life.

“I just became a dad. That changes everything,” he explained. “The schedule for a network show like Chicago P.D. is extremely demanding. I don’t want to miss these early years with my son. I’ve spent over a decade giving everything to this job, and now I feel like it’s time to put my family first.”

Soffer also admitted that after directing several episodes in recent seasons, he has discovered a new passion behind the camera. He plans to focus more on directing and developing new projects that offer greater flexibility and work-life balance.

While he didn’t completely close the door forever, Soffer made it clear that a return in Season 13 is not happening.

“I’m not saying never,” he added. “But for this season, it’s just not the right time. I want to be able to show up fully when I come back — and right now, I can’t make that commitment.”

Impact on the Show

This news comes as another significant blow to Chicago P.D. fans. With Jason Beghe also stepping back and several other cast changes already in motion, the absence of Halstead — one of the show’s most popular characters — will be deeply felt.

Showrunner Gwen Sigan has reportedly rewritten several storylines to account for Soffer’s decision, focusing more on the current ensemble, particularly Dante Torres, Kevin Atwater, and Adam Ruzek.

Many fans are expressing disappointment online, though a large portion also understands and respects Soffer’s choice to prioritize fatherhood.

For now, Jay Halstead remains off duty — and it looks like he’ll stay that way for the entirety of Season 13.

Whether he will ever put the badge back on in the future remains uncertain, but one thing is clear: Jesse Lee Soffer has made his choice, and it’s a deeply personal one
