‘NCIS’ Boss Explains Why Director Vance’s Exit Happened in the 500th Episode After 18 Seasons md14

NCIS stunned fans during its milestone 500th episode with the emotional departure of Director Leon Vance — but according to showrunner Steven D. Binder, the storyline had been planned for years.

Binder revealed the idea of giving Vance a reunion with his late wife Jackie had long existed behind the scenes. Still, writers hesitated because Rocky Carroll’s character had become such a central presence on the series.

When the landmark episode approached, the creative team began searching for a story big enough to match the occasion. That’s when they realized it might finally be time to move forward with Vance’s long-discussed ending.

Binder admitted the decision was difficult but meaningful. He hopes the emotional farewell reminds viewers why they’ve loved the series for more than two decades — while also opening the door for future storytelling.

Importantly, Vance may still appear in flashbacks or special moments, continuing NCIS’ tradition of honoring beloved characters even after their departures.
