“It Wasn’t an Easy Decision” — Jesse Spencer Opens Up About His Retirement from Acting

In a candid and surprisingly emotional interview, Jesse Spencer has finally addressed the rumors head-on: he is stepping away from acting — at least for the foreseeable future — and says the decision was far from easy.

The Australian actor, best known to millions as Captain Matt Casey on Chicago Fire, sat down for a rare in-depth conversation this week and revealed that after more than two decades in the industry, he has chosen to retire from acting to focus on family and a quieter life.

“It wasn’t an easy decision,” Spencer said, his voice thick with emotion. “Chicago Fire gave me everything. It changed my life. Playing Matt Casey for ten years was an honor, but it also took a lot out of me. I realized I was ready to close this chapter and be fully present for my family.”

Spencer, 47, left Chicago Fire as a series regular at the end of Season 10 in 2021 when Casey moved to Oregon to be closer to his mother and take on a new leadership role at a smaller firehouse. He made occasional guest appearances in Seasons 11 and 12, including for Brett and Casey’s wedding, but has not returned since. Many fans held out hope for a full-time comeback or at least more frequent cameos. Those hopes now appear to be over.

In the interview, Spencer spoke openly about the physical and mental toll of long-running television. “The schedule is brutal. You’re away from home for months at a time. Even when you’re home, your mind is still at the firehouse. I missed so many moments with my kids and my wife. At some point, you have to ask yourself what matters most.”

He also addressed the difficulty of saying goodbye to a character who became part of his identity. “Casey wasn’t just a role. He was a piece of me. Walking away from him felt like losing a friend. But I knew if I didn’t step back now, I might regret it later.”

Spencer’s most recent project, the Disney+ limited series Last Days of the Space Age, wrapped filming last year and has been praised for showcasing a different, more grounded side of the actor. He described that experience as “the perfect way to end this chapter” — a smaller, finite project that allowed him to work closer to home in Australia.

When asked if the door is completely closed on Chicago Fire, Spencer gave a gentle but firm answer: “I’m not saying never, but right now… I need to be done. Firehouse 51 will always live in my heart, but it’s time for someone else to carry the torch.”

The news has triggered an outpouring of love and sadness from the One Chicago community. Co-stars including Taylor Kinney, Miranda Rae Mayo, and Eamonn Walker have posted heartfelt tributes, with many calling Spencer “the heart and soul” of the show. Fans have flooded social media with montages of Casey’s best moments, from his leadership in Season 1 to his emotional final rescue.

As Chicago Fire continues Season 14 without its former captain, Spencer’s retirement marks the end of an era for the franchise’s original core. While the show has successfully introduced new characters and storylines, many viewers say the absence of Casey — and now the confirmation that Spencer won’t be returning — leaves a void that will be hard to fill.

For a man who spent over a decade running into burning buildings on screen, Jesse Spencer is now choosing to walk toward a different kind of life — one filled with peace, presence, and family.

And after giving so much to audiences for so long, no one can say he didn’t earn it.
