Patrick Dempsey Says ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Fame Made Him ‘Much More of a Homebody’
Patrick Dempsey — best known to millions as Dr. Derek Shepherd, aka McDreamy on Grey’s Anatomy — recently opened up about how the massive fame he earned from the hit medical drama changed his personal life in unexpected ways.
From Heartthrob to Homebody
In a March 2026 interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Dempsey reflected on the intense spotlight that came with his role on Grey’s Anatomy, which he first joined in the show’s debut season in 2005. The long run and the show’s overwhelming popularity meant he was constantly recognized in public — something he says eventually shifted his lifestyle toward being more private and family‑focused.
“I think in the heat of the success of [Grey’s], it really infringed upon our ability to go out to be social and to be private,” Dempsey explained. “That’s kept us at home a lot more.”
Rather than chasing nightlife or red‑carpet events, the actor says he became more comfortable — and intentional — about staying home, spending time with loved ones, and slowing his life down after years in front of the cameras.
