One of the most frightening moments came in 2010 when Kaley Cuoco, who played Penny, suffered a serious horseback-riding accident. The horse she was riding threw her off and nearly crushed her leg. According to showrunner Chuck Lorre, doctors even warned that amputation might be necessary. Thankfully, surgery saved her leg, and the show cleverly filmed around her injury until she recovered.
Cuoco also experienced emotional challenges on set. She and co-star Johnny Galecki, who played Leonard, dated privately for nearly two years before eventually breaking up. The show also faced real tragedy when actress Carol Ann Susi, the voice of Howard’s unseen mother, died in 2014. Cast members described the loss as devastating, and the writers chose to honor her by writing Mrs. Wolowitz’s death into the storyline.
Meanwhile, Jim Parsons’ decision to leave the show ultimately led to its ending after Season 12. Parsons explained that the passing of his dog and reflections about his late father made him reconsider how he wanted to spend the next phase of his life.
