Alexandra Breckenridge, the lead actress in “Virgin River,” has passed away suddenly at her home md20

Virgin River’s Season 7 finale was full of dramatic twists — Mel and Jack’s baby medical emergency, Brady’s life-and-death cliffhanger, the possible dissolution of Hope and Doc’s marriage, etc. — but there was another surprise viewers might not even be aware of. The episode also served as a discreet farewell to Detective Mike Valenzuela (played by Marco Grazzini), who has been with the show since Season 2.

During the current season, Mike worked with Brie to find Charmaine and solve Calvin’s murder, while also navigating his and Brie’s complicated dynamic. With the couple’s split, and Brie’s rekindling with Brady, “I think we struggled a little bit post-love triangle to find an organic place for Mike to pivot,” showrunner Patrick Sean Smith explains to Soaps.com. “He’d come to Virgin River to take Calvin out. We started the season with Calvin being killed and out of the picture. He spends the season kind of reconciling his relationship with Brie until they can come to a place where they both feel at peace with each other and the decision of them not being together. So we felt like his character — for at least this section of the series — has sort of run his course.” (Likewise, Lauren Hammersley, who plays Charmaine, will not be back in Season 8 now that her storyline has been resolved, Deadline reports.)

In the latest season, Mike found a new romantic connection with his former LAPD trainee Victoria (Sara Canning), who is now an investigator working with the medical board to look into Doc’s practice in Virgin River. In the finale, Victoria announced that she was headed back to Los Angeles now that her investigation was wrapped up. Then she kissed Mike, giving him a reason to visit LA — and he’ll do much more than just temporarily stop by the City of Angels! When the show returns for Season 8, “we’ll understand that [Mike] moved back to LA,” Smith reveals, “but he can always find his way back up north.”

“I love Marco, and I think everybody loves Mike, and he brings so much to it that there’s always an investigation to be had, and when that comes back, I would love to see if we could get Mike back in,” Smith adds. “But I think the idea of that moment between him and Victoria is sort of like his happy ending with her before we see him again.”

Who else is leaving Virgin River?

In addition to saying goodbye to Mike and Victoria, Smith confirms that “there are no plans to have [Marley] back in Season 8.”

When she made the decision to let Mel and Jack adopt her baby, Marley announced that she plans to move and go back to school after the birth. She also asked Mel and Jack not to send her any photos or videos of the baby for the time being. “I think it’s a really interesting story of how they could balance that. I just wanted it to feel true to the experience,” says Smith, who adopted his son with his ex-husband almost 13 years ago. “For us, with our birth mom, she was younger and knew that she needed to put up some boundaries so she could heal in every sense of the word.”

Rachel Drance, who plays Marley, was actually juggling two pregnancies while filming Virgin River, during which time she was also the lead in the musical Waitress in Vancouver. “So she went from one pregnant belly on our show to another pregnant belly on another show,” Smith shares. “She sings beautifully, and was just so inspiring, and I know Alex [Breckenridge] and Martin [Henderson] really loved working with her.”

While Marley currently needs her space after an emotional birth scene in the finale, a return down the road is not out of the question. “I joked with [Rachel], when we were wrapping up, I was like, ‘Well, we’ll see you in Season 8, when we pull a Hand That Rocks the Cradle, and you come back and say you want your baby, and you go psycho,’ and she was like, ‘Oh, wait, I don’t want that,’ and I was like, ‘I’m kidding. We’re totally not doing that,’” Smith recalls with a laugh, adding “when it’s time to bring her back, we’ll bring her back. I love the actress, and I love the character.”
